iPad dock connector problems

My mom's iPad 3 rarely charges no matter which power adapter, computer, or USB cable is used. Today I replaced the dock connector because that seems like the likely fault. After I got it installed it acts the same exact way. When it's connected to my MacBook it says it's charging then not charging once every second about and when I plug it into my iPad mini (retina) power adapter it charges. Nothing else seems to work. Does anyone know why this would be?
