Posted March 27, 2015 Get an SSD. The Black2 is very innovative but it has issues with swapping between the two drives as they are sharing the same bus. If you want a better hybrid implementation, look into Seagate SSHD's. You won't be getting dedicated SSD performance, but the algorithm learns what you do pretty well as they're in the 3rd iteration now. @TechBenchTV Ex-NCIX Tech Tips Producer. Linus hates my scripts. I was thinking about getting a sshd but I don't know about cashe size, I heard it is pretty small. This is my primary laptop and I'm upgrading it for college. I'm resetting my pc to find out how much the os takes up. Should I go for a 120 or 250 gb ssd? Or is a sshd still viable option? If you can do an SSD obviously that would be idea. I used an SSHD for years and it is very snappy - especially if you're just doing productivity stuff. If you're gaming then yes it won't be able to cache everything. but if you're doing internet, documents, etc. then the cache is just fine. The algorithm these days is VERY good. @TechBenchTV Ex-NCIX Tech Tips Producer. Linus hates my scripts. Totally up to you and your needs. I like to have a single drive. Single point of failure as I never keep anything critical on the drive. Obviously if you can afford it.. go for full SSD. 120 is very marginal. go for 240/256 class drive at least. @TechBenchTV Ex-NCIX Tech Tips Producer. Linus hates my scripts. Honestly at this point for the type of stuff you're using. go with anything that is cheap. You probably won't actually notice the different. There are several cheap crucial drives as well as the kingston v300's that you can pick up for $0.5/gb (assuming you're in North America) @TechBenchTV Ex-NCIX Tech Tips Producer. Do I need to change any setting for my hdd to work in the dvd caddy? you shouldn't have to change settings - if it's sata it'll just work. However if your old drive has a boot partition, you might want to be careful with how you boot your system. Perhaps leave the 1TB disconnected while you install windows, or offload your files first to somewhere else. @TechBenchTV Ex-NCIX Tech Tips Producer. Linus hates my scripts. Posted April 1, 2015 I'm trying to get a ssd but I don't know which one and what size to get. I plan on moving my 5400 rpm hdd into a hard drive caddy and put it into the cd slot. Any suggestions? Hey NDNPwnz, Pretty much any SSD would bring you a great speed boost and make your system much more responsive. WD Black is particularly great for laptops as it fits a good 120GB SSD and a 1TB HDD all in one SATA slot. If you already have a 1TB HDD there you would have to decide if you need an extra 1TB in there or a simple pure SSD would be large enough. Regarding SSHDs, the cache size is usually 8GB and you have no control over what goes there. The drive itself decides what you use the most and stores its boot files on the small SSD portion. It would be a goo option of you use just a couple of applciations very often and occasionally do other things. Captain_WD. If this helped you, like and choose it as best answer - you might help someone else with the same issue. ^_^WDC Representative, http://www.wdc.com/ Link to comment https://linustechtips.com/topic/336488-regular-ssd-or-wd-black-2/#findComment-4626376 Share on other sites
