Need help finding $50 headphone/mic solution

Go to solution Solved by Guest,

From what I've read the Siberia v2 has a good bassier sound for their current price point. Would there be much of a difference going to the Sennheisers, or should I discard conventional wisdom?

Is the clip on mic bad?

I haven't heard the SteelSeries but it's hard to imagine that they would be inferior to the HD4x9 Sennheisers. The zalman mic is a $10 mic, it is what it is.

My old Siberia v2 headset died, and I've heard that as far as gaming headsets go it's very good audio quality.

My current thoughts are either get Sennheiser HD429 and a Zalman mic, or get a new Siberia v2. Both options are $50. Advice? I play FPSes and listen to electronic music. I'm in a dorm so closed back would be best, unless any open backed headphones don't leak.

By definition, open backs will leak sound in and out. But once you tried gaming with open backs, you'll not want to go back to closed backs....

I know, I just wanted to avoid the "lel closed back sux" that I see on /r/headphones. If only they would actually give advice in the sticky advice thread...

Also, I've seen someone say all the 4x9 line have the same drivers, just different build. I'm looking into that but still not sure if the Siberias would be better because of the boom mic. I'd take a small hit to audio quality to not need Push-to-talk.

This is true. More importantly, they all share the same general sound profile, which is boosted bass and terrible treble. If you were happy with the SteelSeries, I would just get another pair.
