Are you looking for product suggestions or confirmation that you can game at 1440p? 970 should absolutely handle that resolution with damn near all current titles.

Also, what size and type of monitor do you prefer?

You can get 60 fps with a 970 on 1440p but not with max setting that's all.

A GTX 970 is a bump from a R9 280x, but it's just that, a bump.

It's not night and day performance differences, it is a bit cooler and consumes less power though, just make sure you keep your expectations in check.

I'd personally recommend the Gigabyte G1 Gaming version, or EVGA SSC ACX 2.0 Version, as I've had great success with both when it comes to normal operation and overclocked operation.

So you would reccomend saving and buying a gtx 980 or 2 gtx 970?

If you have the money I'm personally a strong supporter of 1 powerful card vs 2 weaker cards (especially for things above 1080p 60FPS) but there are those who would disagree with me.

The benefit of one card is that you will always get the performance you paid for. Games like World of Warcraft, Dota 2, League of Legends, and other popular games do not support SLI and will actually technically lose 2-5% performance when using SLI in them as well as possibly run into other SLI-based issues. The theory behind 2 970s over 1 980 is that it shouldn't matter; 1 970 running at 95% performance should still be enough. While at 1080p@60fps this might be true for most games, but at 1440p, 4k, 1080p@144fps or 1440p@144fps (or other configs such as multi-monitor or ultrawide monitor) the second 970 will be sitting there doing sweet nothing in these games that don't support SLI and you will end up not getting the performance you paid for and needing it to maintain 60/144fps

I like a 27" monitor

1440p monitors are hard to come by because it's such an odd standard, and so you are looking at about 300£ at cheapest for 27' daily driver kind of monitor, and about 500£ for legitimate gaming monitors and decent IPS panels. May I suggest settling for 1080p at that size?
