Extra display question

Go to solution Solved by Theo,

When gaming...have you put anything like a video on the secondary "for the wife/kids or whatever" and noticed any performance loss?

you might see a decrease there but nothing unbearable, ive had youtube videos on my secondary while gaming, i was even watching the microsoft E3 conference in HD while playing Civilization V and everything was fine.

I have a dell 1280 x 1024 moniter and was wondering if adding it to my setup as an extra moniter would have any real noticeable frame rate drop. Also is there any way i can set it to turn off when i play a game

So, this is going to be a secondary monitor where you wouldn't be playing games? If so, it should't affect gameplay unless you extend gaming over two screens with something like eyefinity.

CPU: i5 4670k • Cooler: Corsair H100i • Motherboard: MSI Z87 MPOWER • RAM: Crucial Ballistix Elite 2x 8GB • Storage: Samsung 840 250GB SSD, 2x WD Red 3TB • GPU: EVGA GTX 780 3GB • PSU: Corsair RM750W • Case: Corsair 750D • Mouse: Razer Naga 2012 (I actually use the thing for productivity/media buttons) • Keyboard: Ducky Shine 3 w/ Browns - Green LED • Monitor: Asus PB278Q 27" 2560 x 1440, ASUS PB238Q 23" 1920x1080 • Lighting: 2m NZXT Sleeved Blue LED Strip • pcpartpicker.com/p/3cHfZ

If that second monitor is OFF when gaming, you will not lose any performance.

The performance will probably not be significantly affected, provided that you have a decent graphics card. One issue you may run into, though, is that the second monitor is a different resolution than the first, so some parts of windows get kinda screwy when that happens.

Also, you can connect the second monitor to your iGPU if you don't want the extra load on your GPU.

Dude Seriously...

And when Its ON..You will not lose performance either...

Gaming on a single monitor when having a second connected and running will NOT take anything away from you performance wise.

@ idle times, instead of dropping to 350mhz it will only drop to 500mhz due to dual monitors being connected. This happens to EVERYONE, so if you see it, don't stress.

As Stated, losing performance will only happen if you run in a window..and drag the window resizing it to encompass BOTH screens, then obviously it has to render more.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

If it is on you will lose 1-2FPS. (Idling at desktop)

And if you are whatching videos from youtube, you will lose 5-10FPS. :)

We were Talking about losing gaming performance on a single screen by having a secondary connected. Not idle desktop FPS.

When your gaming on a single screen, You should be concentrating on that..... Not watching something on your secondary monitor.

&

Yes I forsee some people who watch on a second screen and play games on their primary. But if this was your plan, then you should have setup a system that was capable to do so beforehand.
