Hi,

I am in the process of building my first pc and have been doing a lot of research. I have an idea of where my build is heading, but I wish to have your ideas and opinions.

My buget would Idealy be between 700-800 $ CAD but I am willing to go up to 1000$. This is for a gaming pc witch I would like to run games at 1080p with 60fps. I play a wide range of games, so I would play more demanding games like Far Cry 4. I plan to run it on a single monitor. I would also like to have place for upgrades, like maybe running crossfire/sli in the futur, as I might want to move up to triple monitors later on when I have more money available for it. I don't need any peripherals or an OS, but If you could fit a 23-24" 1080p monitor in the budget, that would be nice. In that case my budget would more around the 1000$ CAD.

I am making the move from consoles for multiple reasons, so I don't have any spare parts. Only thing I don't need is a DVD/CD drive (already have one).

Looking forward to this build and to you input!

I can suggest the GPU for your build- gigabyte G1 GTX 970 :)

I'm planning a build for you on PC Part picker... does the $1000 max budget include a monitor?

If not click here for a build I made that's just over $1000 and fits in an R9 290X

Check out Linus' 4K under $1000 video for a great computer around that price point without a monitor.

His holiday build guide includes one sub $1000 and around $1000 build possibilities, and his budget build features a great build for a low price point.

Just quote this and ask for another recommendation if you would like some changes to the PC Part Picker build that I made.

Hope this helps :D

This looks like what I was heading for, but for the gpu I was thinking more something's in the line of a R9 270/270x or even a 280 since the cost significantly less. I don't think it will prevent me for playing at 1080p, is it?

Like I said 700-800 would be ideal, without a monitor as I don't really need one.

The monitor I would used is borrowed, so if you can fit a decent monitor and keep me at around 1000$ that would be amazing.

I tried to do so but couldn't

Thanks for your help :D

Well you want the best graphics card for the price, because a 290 would work well for about $300. A 280 should be sufficient but ultra settings might not get you 60fps... A 290 or 290X might last longer...

Anyways, if you intend on mainly gaming on this PC, you should spend about 40% of your budget on a GPU. Otherwise, spend about 30-20% of your budget on it.

I do recommend more money on a GPU if gaming is what this is for. But if you're doing work and gaming on the side, investing that money in a CPU is better.

Hope this helps :D

Would that CPU be up to the same par as that GPU? It seems like you're splurging a bit on that 290x, personally this is the build that I think would be good

http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/BXYXNG

Then again I havent even built it yet so I dont know everything about PC's

Been playing on a laptop for 6 years, I play Dota 2 with 10fps. Some might say this is impossible, I say its just annoying

Spending more money on a GPU will usually pay off a bit more than a CPU. If you're gaming, you will want to spend a good percentage of your money on a GPU and then buy a CPU that is powerful enough not to bottleneck. You could have an AMD FX-6300 or an Intel i7 4790K, which have a $300 price difference, and get the same fps with something up to a GTX 970 (including a 290X). If you aren't gaming, and are looking for multitasking performance or better video rendering, you will want an 'all around' better computer. This means stepping up the RAM, CPU and GPU equally. My build (below) is quite balanced. I don't focus on gaming, but use the computer as a capable gaming machine. I do a good amount of video rendering and work a lot with larger files, which will require a better all around PC.

If this build is for gaming (which it appears it is), then get the best GPU that fits in your budget. If not, then you should get something good all around. Personally, I would opt for a newer i5-4690K if you were to get a processor. It has overclocking potential, and will get you a much better turbo boost and clock speed. Overall it's a better investment imo. Also, $1000 PCs don't need 1866mhz RAM, it's not worth the price. RAM should typically be bought at 8GB and 1600mhz until about the $1500 range.

But regardless, if this is only for gaming, then GPUs should be where you splurge. If you check out Linus' holiday build guide (budget), he tries his best to squeeze in the best graphics card at low prices. He also tries to fit in a 970 (same price as a 290X) in his $1000 4K build guide. But if you can only spend $500 (linus budget build guide), good GPUs won't be an option because you have so little money to work with. According to the budget build guide, you either buy the best value card (fps/$ sweet spot), or you spend as much money as you can on a GPU, which you would usually do between the $800 to $1500 range for gaming.

Don't get me wrong. If you are not gaming and just want to build a computer for about $1000, buy an r9 260X or GTX 750Ti. Splurging on GPUs is if you want to game on this computer mainly, and it'll last longer without requiring updates for all AAA titles at 1080p for years and years to come. If you get a GTX 970 or R9 290X, you can even play in 1440p at 60fps. These graphics cards will easily pull 100fps at 1080p which will prevent upgrades for years to come. If you feel you REALLY don't need this, then I guess you can go R9 280 or preferably a GTX 960

Hope this clears things up, and I hope it helps :D

Ok, that helps a lot. I think it would be smart dropping a little more of the budget on the GPU knowing it would hold up longer and even work at 1440p. I will probably save up and get a 1440p monitor, as they will probably drop in price moving from now on.

Sounds great! That might be a great option! Just keep in mind a GTX 750 Ti or r9 260X will pull 30-35 fps on Ultra at 1080p. I recommend getting a GTX 960 or perhaps an r9 280X (cheaper) for true 60fps at 1080p.

Also, before when I said 150fps at 1080p, that's at low-medium settings, ultra would get you about 100fps with a GTX 970 lol don't want to overestimate
