Hello,

I just recently upgrade some parts from my PC Motherboard (Rampage iv extreme),case and cooling system, and I also got another SSD Card(EVO 840) and I have the 840 they are both Samsung with 120 GB and i want them to work as RAID 0 to boot up programs and I  have 1 TB storage for the big files, Now my question and what I Need help is can i make the work as RAID 0(if yes how)and don't loss any of my files, data and most important Windows 7 that I already have install on my 840 SSD Card. I've been try to see videos and YouTube and Google it but cant find anything about it , please if you have a video that shows what i need can you post .

Thank you!!

I did this recently with the following steps :

1. Change Window's SATA mode from AHCI to RAID. This guide should be clear enough. Look for the "Change to RAID mode from AHCI mode or IDE mode" part.

2. Make an image of your C drive on an empty hard drive. I used Acronis True Image to create the image. The "empty hard drive" part can get complicated if you do not have any...

3. In your BIOS, change the SATA configuration from to AHCI to RAID.

4. Save and exit, and while booting, press CTRL+I on the Intel Rapid Storage Technology screen.

5. Create the RAID 0 by following the instructions on screen.

6. Boot into Windows (using the hard drive which contains the image created during step 2).

7. Create an image of said hard drive on your new RAID array drive. You can now boot from it.

It might look complicated, but it's pretty simple.

Why would u use IDE for RAID?

I typed "AHCI to SATA" twice, but actually meant "AHCI to RAID". That's what I did and it worked flawlessly. Typing this from the system on which I performed it. But waiting for other replies is never a bad idea. :)

Thanks for clarifying that!

I really wouldn't use RAID 0 if I were you, it screwed me over once reeeeal nice. Beside doing regular backups, you could try RAID 10, but that would take 4 drives.

Do they have to be 4 of the same drives? I have 2 Samsung 840 Evo and 2 PNY. All 240gb

No.

However, you'll end up with a 480 instead of 960 GB partition - the data of one disk is mirrored on another.

I want more capacity, why wont you recommend doing RAID 0? does it take life from the SSD? or you are just saying it for safety ?

OK. But what is raid 10? I've read about it before but I don't remember...

Found this "The nature of raid 0 is that your data is split on two two drives. This ideally allows for twice the throughput since each drive is only doing half the work. As each drive is doing half the work, there is no reason that a RAID 0 would shorten lifespans."

Think of RAID 10 like a combo of RAID 0 and RAID 1 - two drives form a RAID 0, which is split over another pair of drives as a sort of RAID 1.

Safety is an issue. If you mention RAID 0 to any IT professional, they might give you some odd looks.

What does raid 1 do?

Thanks. And should I get a raid controller to be safe? I've heard both ways and just want some more opinions on it.
