Desktop GPU in Laptop, how far away?

Ace Lean

So basically I was wondering if you could get a desktop GPU in your laptop. Single slot cards would not exactly have trouble in finding room in some laptop chassis. Or is this a ridiculous idea? I have no clue.

Only thing you can do is get an external USB connected GPU.

Only by connecting via adapter & usb

It will never happen. Large GPUs like GM200 would be practically impossible due to power and heat.(note that those GPUS don't exist in single slot configurations, even in Quadro and Firepro cards)

If you want a small-chip desktop GPU like GK104(gtx 680 and 770) or GM204 (970 and 980), you can already buy that as a 680M, 780M, 880M, or 980M.(and others).

The issues with using a desktop card in a laptop are that the PCB itself is too big, and it doesn't support enough low power states to offer practical batter life. Ideally, you should re-engineer the card for a small PCB and lower power usage. The resulting card would be identical to MXM cards that already exist.

i7 not perfectly stable at 4.4.. #firstworldproblems

USB does not have enough bandwidth to support a graphics card. For that, you'd need (mini) PCI express or Thunderbolt

3+ years... don't count on it...

Unless they manage to get a small enough open standard connector that can carry PCIe 3.0 x16 and allow it to operate in hotplug mode, it won't be happening anytime soon...

Misunderstood OP... disregard above...

Depends on price point... High end laptops that sport powerful mobile GPUs are already as good as (or even better than) GTX x50 (and equivalent) right now...

As for affordable... maybe in 7 years??

and I haven't heard a company use it for laptop

also USB GPU

personally... I don't really like laptop for gaming.

just get cheap laptop, and gaming desktop and get done with it.

GTX 780M == GTX 680 with downclock

I do this, I get desktop GPU in laptop. I win.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

It'll never happen. Mobile chips are already just desktop chips on custom small PCBs for the most part

Bought a powermac G5, expect a mod log sometime in 2015

Corsair is overrated, and Anime is ruined by the people who watch it
