Good Quality Mic Setup for Voice Comms/Gaming/Whatever

Hi guys!

I was looking into getting a desktop mic or something but I'm trying to make a good purchase. As of now, I'm using a Zalman ZM1 clip on, which is on the cord of my HD 558's but the sound positioning is a bit weird since its below/near my neck.

I do have a modmic somewhere but I don't think it works + it kept falling off the mount.

I was looking at something like a Blue Yeti (Blackout edition to be specific) but I wanted to know if there were any better solutions. I saw Linus' recent video on the Blue Yeti/Seiren/SL600 but was curious if there might be a better "starter" option.

I have a small desk so if I could get a boom-arm instead of having it on the desk that'd be great.

I'd like any mic recommendations + "startup" items such as boom-arm/pop filter/whatever I'd need for good sound. I usually have a floor fan on in the background (not directly pointed at the mic) as well as a Logitech G910 mechanical keyboard, so not a particularly loud switch.

You don't need such a high end mic for that. Just get something cheap, it will be good enough for gaming and things like skype and teamspeak. If you want some better sound, you can get a Modmic from Antlion.

I did not like my yeti. That is until I got a boom.

For clear audio is has to be close to your face, and the stand it comes with, makes micro vibrations in your desk sound like an earth quake.

When I got my $10 boom, the mic fit the bill. The quality is much better, and that's what makes the mic worth it.

Get the yeti, or the AT2020, and drop $20 on a solid boom (or boom and shock mount if you get the AT2020) and you'll be golden.

If you dont mind the second cable on the ModMic then I would suggest fixing the problem you have with yours and use it. You say it keeps falling off. What are you doing when this happens? Only time I've had problems with the ModMic falling off was when I stepped on the cable or the cable got caught on my chair leg. Me personally, I dislike having the second cable but the ModMic does sound good and you already have it.

And spending over $50 on a mic just for game chat is kind of stupid (I know, just an opinion. but lets get real, a Yeti or AT2020 is way overkill for game chat). If you want a new mic then a Snowball or Samson Meteorite would still be overkill and good quality. I guaranty your friends wont know the difference if you use a snowball or a yeti. They'll just be happy to talk to you no matter what mic you use, unless its a super cheap one that sounds like youre talking into a tin can. Then they'll just be happy you logged off :)

PC Audio Setup = Beyerdynamic DT 770 pro 80 ohm and Sennheiser pc37x (also for xbox) hooked up to Schiit Fulla 3

The Yeti and AT2020 are overkill for simple voice chat. The blue snowball is great for even light YouTube work, and I've heard similar things about the Samson meteor. Personally use a CAD U37 which occasionally goes on sale for less than a snowball.

The modmic magnet wasn't holding well and the sticky side wasn't sticking to my earcup well, idk. I had heard my friends Yeti and it sounded pretty amazing so that's why i considered it.

As I said in the OP and above in this post, modmic kept falling off the headset and my friends Yeti sounded amazing, I'll ask him about his mic setup.

I'll consider this, thank you!

Alright I'll look into the CAD u37
