WD re3

Go to solution Solved by Captain_WD,

What exactly are these drives?

Wanna pick up a ultra cheap hdd for the PC I'm selling and they're only $25...

Hey PANICPR0NE,

WD Re3 is an enterprise-class drive from the older Western Digital line. It is designed for both performance and reliability and is great for servers, RAID arrays and demanding applications. Here's some more info on it: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=WLLxwF

Although pretty old, I would say that WD Re3 are great drives and if you can find it at a lower price, I would say that this is a good deal. :)

Re drives are great. They are enterprise drives. Where are you finding them for 25 bucks?

Amazon with 2 day shipping.

Idk if the hard drive will help it sell but I figured a hdd was a good place to start...

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001ALNQ2W/?tag=pcpapi-20

Oh it's only a 250gb? That won't help it sell.. a 1TB one would, but people will discount it because of that tiny drive.

WD RE3 drives are rather old. They were succeeded by the RE4, which in turn were

succeeded by the current RE (which, technically speaking, would be the RE5, but

they dropped the numbering).

Apparently the RE3 came out in fall 2008, based on this review's date:

There's a 1tb re4 used for $40...

This may be me.. but avoid used drives like the plague. You don't know how much they've been used, and how much life is left.

As long as the performance meets your requirement and the drive is actually new,

it could still be a viable option, yes. I can't make this decision for OP though. ;)

I have some RE4s, very nice drives, yes.

EDIT:

I would however avoid used drives.

Green drives are $50 new but not sure of the quality of those either lol

I've only used barracudas and wd blue drives...

WD greens are a lot better than they used to be.

Greens are fine as long as you don't need super speed or RAID. In fact, newer

greens with higher platter densities might be faster than older 7.2k drives

(I haven't checked, somebody probably should before making a decision).

I have a few Greens, they've been running fine for quite a while now. :)

I would recommend at least a 1TB drive. Under that, it's not really worth it.

I might clean up one of my blues and stick it in there then get me a green later...

If you do that, I'd use a program that can actually zero out the drive.

Umm I just reformatted it

Reformat isn't zeroing it out. Search for "zero fill hard drive", several manufacturers make software to do it. Reformatting it won't make all data inaccessible.

Only thing saved on the HDD was a picture of a screen shot on something I was selling so worth zeroing?
