Is a q6600 enough for a Minecraft/file sharing server? If so that would help me out a lot since I want to pit a server up in the house and all I would need is a couple of 4tb drives.

Yes it would be but remember MBR (Legacy) doesn't support over 2TB drives and the Q6600 is a bit powerhungry for something that's always on.

I could probably work with 2tb drives.

I live in america, power consumption isn't super important to me.

One more question, is it simply sufficient or is it a pretty good choice for this use-case?

I'd say sufficient. Without overclocking it's about as fast as a G3220 pentium.

Okay. For the moment its all in a dell XPS 420, and I Dont really feel like throwing much money at it. Is there a way to overclock it without changing mobo to a non dell one?

What about moving the Minecraft server to some unused threads on my 4790k build? I assume I'd be able to run Minecraft on the 1-2 threads it uses and run the server on a separate set of threads and be able to play+operate well?

I use a Q6600 with a 64GB ssd for my minecraft server it only had 4GB of ddr2 ram and runs smoothly.

Blocklag? Instability? Number of people? Mods?

6-7 people no blocklag, i use rainbow server as well (so yes mods).

Very stable but an SSD is a must IMO, loading etc is so much faster.

Also if its a Q6600 run the server on linux. I use Fedora workstation for my rainbow server.

My vanilla server runs on my red hat file server but its a 4670k.

Thats alot. Im not really sure as rainbow manages it with packages not "mods" How much ram does ur Q6600 have?

If u run it on linux i doubt there will be much of a problem as long as u have under 15 people on.

It has 3 but I can up it to four or eight.

How well do you think it would run on a 4790k while I play it at the same time?

OK. Just to make sure I mean running the server on the same system its being played on. Like, a single PC is a client and host at the same time.

I can't say anything about running the MC server as I don't play, but you can definitely use larger than 2TB drives with a Q6600.

I have a 3TB and a 4TB drive installed in mine and they work just fine

Core i7-2600k @ 4.65Ghz - Asus Maximus IV Gene Z - 2x4GB Corsair Vengeance LP Cerilian Blue - Samsung EVO 840 250GB - Seagate Barracuda 7200 1TB - 2x EVGA Geforce GTX 760 SC - Corsair AX850, custom sleaved and length - Silverstone Sugo heavily modified - Full loop with EK blocks and 360 rad, frozenq res.
