Hi, I need a CPU to run a Minecraft server at home. It seems as all the minecraft server hosters charge way too much for the hardware.

Looking to run a server with 50 people on average and 100 on the weekends with about 40 plugins. I can figure out which motherboard and other components to buy based on the cpu.

CPU: Intel i5 4690k @ 4.3 GHz       GPU: MSI GTX 980                      Cooling: be quiet! Pure Rock                     OS: Windows 7            Monitor: BenQ XL2411Z

Motherboard: AsRock Z97 PRO4   PSU: Corsair 600W CX600M       Keyboard: Razer BlackWidow Ultimate   SSD: Intel 120GB 520   Headset: HyperX Cloud II

RAM: 12GB Crucial Ballistix            Case: Corsair 750D                       Mouse: Logitech G502                         HDD: Seagate 1TB        Speakers: Audioengine A5+

Can't agree more with hosters charging way too much, and you usually get less than what you can get if you were to spend that first couple months rent on a build yourself. Hosters rank servers based off of the amount of ram they have, which should send up red flags immediately, yes ram on a server is important, but 6gb of ram or more on a server with <20 people on constantly is overkill. The bigest thing that effects your performance is the cpu and bandwidth.

You'll need to make sure you can dedicate about 5mb of your internet's upload/download speed on both sides to accommodate the server. After that things like an SSD can help with keeping blocklag from being a thing, and would mean better load times. As far as cpus go, you'll want a midrange K10 family cpu, meaning something along the lines of a Athlon x4, or if you can find some a Phenom II x4 or x6. If you want to go intel, look into some older I5's or Xeons, but keep note that those builds are going to be more expensive, and that's just kinda that :l

Updated 2021 Desktop || 3700x || Asus x570 Tuf Gaming || 32gb Predator 3200mhz || 2080s XC Ultra || MSI 1440p144hz || DT990 + HD660 || GoXLR + ifi Zen Can || Avermedia Livestreamer 513 ||

New Home Dedicated Game Server || Xeon E5 2630Lv3 || 16gb 2333mhz ddr4 ECC || 2tb Sata SSD || 8tb Nas HDD || Radeon 6450 1g display adapter ||

Just Minecraft?

How many clients? Mods?

You just need it to run a server? and just a cpu?

Just updated the post with more info. Sorry for being so vague

Is fine.

What's your internet connection like? Could you show us a speedtest.net result?

I think you'll want 8-12GB RAM, but then that's my opinion.

Sig under construction.

I get 20 Mbps down and 5 Mbps up and 10 ping. Also I might be switching to a new company that advertises 50/50.

I'm not sure that 5mbps would be good enough for that many players, but 50 would definitely be fine.

The two drives in Raid will be fast enough to prevent block lag. This could also be used as a home server, Mass storage. Also, movie box.

Good luck! :D

Block lag is caused by the server lagging or connection lag...

I thought it had something to go with read and write speeds of the drives. I don't play mine craft. There is a good wireless card on there anyways.
