z97 upgrade question

Go to solution Solved by ravenpoe,

yes I have the key.

Hello I am going too upgrade from a amd fx 8350 and asus 990 fx mobo too a ii5 4690k and a z97 mobo. My question is will I have to uninstall my windows from the ssd  or will I be able too keep my system the same and install the new parts?

It should work fine. Windows will probably ask you for the registration key after a while. It did the same when I upgraded to a new motherboard.

You will have to reinstall. Windows will become deactivated with a motherboard change.

You will need clean reinstall

I didn't have to reinstall when I changed from a MSI Z87-G43 to a Asus Z97 Sabertooth Mark S

But I guess it could be different if he changes from AMD to Intel.

I didn't have to either, but I did have to call Microsoft to reactivate

Because you're changing platforms from AMD to Intel you will have to do a clean reinstall. If you backup your system you still can restore it though.

Sometimes when you're upgrading like just the CPU you should be ok but if you're changing the mobo, you sometimes have to reinstall, but not always. Definitely if you're changing companies though.

Hope this helps :D

Between same-platform mobos it's fine... but when switching platforms (AMD to Intel) it will break Windows.

i switched from old intel 775 to AM3+, and then from AM3+ to haswell...without re-installing ANYTHING and it worked flawlessly.

I have windows 8.1 will that make a difference? Also if I try it without installing windows and it does mess up will I be able to just re install it?

of course, you can always format the drive and re-install a fresh copy of windows on it and then all the required drivers...do you have a key for your copy of windows?
