All,

This is my first post on this forum so first i would like to say hello to everyone! I have a question i would like some feedback on but i would like for said feedback to be subjective and not based on opinion and this concerns two different CPU manufacturers. I am debating on the optimal setup for my main rig and have two system i would like to reconfigure for the best setup. This first is my current configuration on my main rig:

ASUS P8P67 DELUX

Intel I5-2500K

32GB Corsaie Dominator 1866

Nvidia GeForce 560TI

2 x 2TB WD Black HDD (RAID1)

2 x 1TB WD Green (RAID1)

1 x 300GB 10k Raptor (for VM's)

Corsair H100 CPU Cooler

Corsair 850watt PSU

(some additonal cards not important)

The second rig:

ASUS M5A990x EVO R2.0

AMD FX 8320

16GB Corsair XMP 1333

4 x 500GB WD Black RE (RAID5) DATA)

1 x 250 WD Blue (OS)

ATI HD45xx (Cheap used for my wife to play sims on the system)

 Stock Cooler

So my question is this, should i be running the Intel or the AMD on my Semi-Gaming Rig? I do a lot with virtual machines and my intention was to utilize the AMD system a an ESX host but have found myself using this system as my mail Virtual Host. So i put it to you AMD VS Intel?

(EDIT) Just to clerify, i own both of these rigs and want to put the two together (swap parts) to get the best single rig. (or leave the one i have alone)

Get the AMD setup but as for a motherboard get this

GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3 AMD 990FX

Ive heard quite a few problems with Asus boards with AMD due to power phases and stuff, these problems are for any boards that arent sabertooth or rog series.

I think I would prefer better performance compared to boasting about a high clock speed. It would be better to get an 8 core cpu as the consoles are both 8 core based meaning future games will make use of the cores much more then right now. I hate to say it but consoles dictate quite a few things for pcs.

i would go with the fx 8320, with the 990fx Sabertooth you will be able overclock without any problems ;)

If it is your second rig that you won't be using as much go with AMD to save a little bit of money.

Intel should be your primary gaming rig if you are looking for performance.

Just to clerify, i own both of these rigs and want to put the two together (swap parts) to get the best single rig. (or leave the one i have alone)

Well since you only have a 560ti it wouldn't really matter what cpu you used with it. Both the 2500k and the 8320 will be bottlenecked by that card. If the VMs will benefit from the 2500k then switch it out and use that as your second rid. I am unsure of your exact usage scenario.

My Primary usage is hosting a Virtual Lab, I guess what i am looking for the most imput on 2500k vs AMD 8230 as i know more cores does not necessarily mean better considering they are only logical cores.

Do not get the GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3 if you go AMD, not unless you can be 100% sure you're not getting a Revision 3. Honestly I recommend you stay away from the UD3 in general, if you wanna go Gigabyte get the UD5.

I personally will never get anything Gigabyte ever again, me and a lot of other people tried to get help from them with the UD3 and they just blew us off leaving us with broken motherboards.

If you wanna know why I say not to get it you can read this: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/14393-gigabyte-ga-990fxa-ud3-revision-30-stay-away/
