Hey guys! I'm looking to upgrade my i5-2500k/GTX 670/8GB ram build (edit: this old rig is going to my brother, which is one of the reasons I'm upgrading. Sorry I didn't make that clear in my original post!) to something that can better run modern titles maxed out at 1080p 144hz or a potential upgrade to 1440p over the next few years. I use multiple monitors for productivity (work/school), so if I do upgrade to include a 1440p monitor I'd like to have it running alongside my two current 1080p monitors if that's possible. Gaming would be my main use, but I do multitask a LOT. Skype video calls, stream viewing and streaming myself, way too many tabs in chrome, and gaming at the same time happens pretty often. I've thrown together the following as a sort of "theory" build of what I'm looking at. I've had very good experiences with nvidia and intel and would like to stick with them if possible. Any equivalent components that save me money or upgrades for very little extra cash would be awesome, though.

Motherboard: Asus Maximus VII Hero

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790k

GPU: 2x GTX 970 (pref something black and red, was eyeing the MSI model)

RAM: 16GB of gskill Trident X series 2133 (mostly because it's red)

SSD: I have a 512GB samsung 850 pro that I bought in november

HDD: 1TB HDD

Case: Corsair Obsidian 750D

PSU: Corsair RM850 modular 850W 80+ gold

CPU cooler: NZXT Kraken X61

Looking at this just on newegg, the price comes to around 1850, I'm sure money could be saved with better shopping around (which I will do closer to friday, when I pull the trigger on this one). This is mostly a sanity check to make sure this is going to be a solid build for what I'll be using it for. Thanks for any input or advice!

Great for power, wish I had that

“When life gives you lemons, don’t make lemonade. Make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don’t want your damn lemons, what the hell am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life’s manager! Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons! Do you know who I am? I’m the man who’s gonna burn your house down! With the lemons! I’m gonna get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!”

Holy cow these forums are active. I should hang out here more often!

this is good

obviously

wanna hmu with that old comp kthx

Thanks, and part of the reason I'm upgrading is to hook up my little brother with a gaming rig. Sorry =P

get cheaper MBO and EVGA 750G2

I was debating a cheaper Mobo, have any specific suggestions?

If I were you I'd keep that i5 slap 8 extra gb of ram in and upgrade the gpu and save the rest of the money.

That old rig is going to my little brother or I would. I'm also a bit unnecessarily power hungry >_>

Any specific suggestions for mobo? Also seeing two recommendations for that PSU makes me definitely think I'll swap over to that one.

Hey guys! I'm looking to upgrade my i5-2500k/GTX 670/8GB ram build...

That 2500k is still good. Provided your mobo and PSU can support SLI, all you really need is a nice pair of GPU's to run at 1440p. Acer is set to release the XB270HU which is a 144hz IPS 1440p display, very sexy.

You should tell us what you have at the moment (mobo, cpu cooler, case, psu). If the mobo is good enough, then stick with it. PSU should be around 750w and of decent quality. Case should be good enough to support decent airflow. And the cooler just needs to be good, good ones aren't that expensive. Provided you got everything there good enough, all you really need then is a GTX 970 and then another when you get that nice sexy Acer beast.

Edit: since the old pc is going elsewhere:

if you don't mind the colour, an MSI Z97 SLI KRAIT is a good one. For black and red, the MSI Z97 GAMING SERIES
