Overclocking Decisions

Just curious about how you guys do your overclock. For example, I'm currently at 4.4GHz on my 4690K with 1.250 volts, would you stay at this or go up to 4.5GHz but the voltage at 1.300 volts? It's a very significant increase in volts for just 100 MHz so what do you guys think?

After experiments, I've come to a stable list

 

4.4GHz - Stable at 1.250v

4.5GHz - Stable at 1.300v

4.6GHz - Stable at 1.350v

 

Which one should I stick with? All of them ran at 100% load at 70C on my H80i so yeah liquid cooling really goes a long way lol

How hot is the CPU running? If you are running at about 60C at full load then go for it. If you are closer to 80C then keep it as it is. 

If you are somewhere in the middle try to pull it off at 1.275 volts.

In XTU, it has a high of 88°C. Real Temp GT tells me that the max is 85°C. That waa at 1.255 volts.

I'm currently stressing it at 1.250 volts.

Ambient is about 29°C

Got another question, I can't for the life of me, find the option to change the ram to it's xmp profile. Is it dependent on what type of ram I have?

The only option I've set so far is to force the ram to run at 1866MHz. Other than that, I couldn't find an option to select the xmp profile. I've read that Kingston's HyperX doesn't support xmp somewhere but I'm not too sure on that.

i've scanned the entire user manual and there is no XMP setting. manual mode

for timings, voltage and speed. i don't use kingston XMP, too much foul errors.

in that case, just set the values manually anyway.

 

but get your overclock stable first, before cranking in the RAM.

So right now I'm in the bios and I'm looking around. I think asus and msi have different terminology because I don't see cache multiplier but rather rinf ratio. I kindda need help with the terminology here.

yes, MSI using ring and ASUS using cache are the same terminology.

1.26 is fine. your heating issue is prolly stressing with adaptive mode enabled

(non-MSI UEFI controlled). you can change this in the XTU after changing CPU

voltage from adaptive mode to static mode. then retest.

So I should stick with 4.4GHz rather than 4.5GHz?

My temps are hitting the 88°C right now at 4.4 too so I have yet to play with the voltages to keep the temps low.

not being an intel overclocking guru id say stick with it at 4.4 and reduce voltage cpu, ring etc as much as you can while remaining stable (prime95 1 hour small fft and  or blend) and do it 1 by one. and see if that helps with temps, if you still cant get temps under control (assuming good cooling properly applied) then you may have a leaky chip and just need to back it down to 4.3 or so, seriously a few hundred mhz doesnt make any noticable difference these days, i could run my fx at stock and not lose 1 fps, your i5 will be the same.

again not an intel overclocker (only got my g3258 last friday but immediately began playing).

i dont know this...but im thinking... you want your ring bus as close to the core speed as possible because its likely a transport bus between the different parts of a cpu core such as the l3 cache and can increase performance in tasks that require high bandwidth to memory intensive apps, but seeing as you ahve an i5 and not an i7 you dont need to worry about it, it also in all likelyhood makes very little difference and in the overclocking guide i read for the g3258 (same as 4690k) most people run it around 300mhz lower than core, also running it higher will often require extra voltage applied to it which we're trying to avoid.

all in all id try 4.4ghz core with 4ghz ring bus (that way its easy to remember your core is running 10% faster than your ring bus OR your ring bus is 90% of core clock...

id try core voltage first and start at 1.25, if you can get towards 1.2 it should be a good chip! from there try ring bus and so on, dont change 1 until you've done another.

Finally stable at 4.4GHz with Core Voltage at 1.250v, Core Input Voltage at 1.900v and Cache Voltage at 1.300v.

 

The highest temps I got was 90C on the H80i but then again, the pc has been running the entire day so the hot ambient air got accumulated in the case. Should be safe now. Got 951 marks on XTU. Gonna go back to the shop and swap out the H80i too. Apparently they gave me an open package because it was the last one on the shelf.

You can probably run 4.4 at a lower Voltage than you have set now.

 

I know every CPU is different, but I was getting 4.6GHz at v1.222, so you can try to lower the Voltage if you can keep it stable at the lower voltage.

 

I kinda used this as a guideline of what someone else was able to achieve.

You can see in the link they get 4.6GHz with just v1.199, this could really help out with your heat.

ah, Sorry! I misread that you have a 4690k, I thought it said 4790k, That's probably good results for your chip, try researching other peoples results.

Well. One guy got 4.4GHz at 1.19v with the same mobo as me. Too bad mine bsods when I go below 1.25v. >.<

It's average I would say. The highest OC on the same chip is 4.8GHz and the lowest is 4.2GHz.
