If I remember correctly, the open source driver is significantly better than AMD's official driver.

Yep, the open source driver is a whole magnitude better. I was able to get my old 9000igp running loads better under the open source driver, and it seemed to match the performance of the proprietary one used for Windows.

I use the fglrx-updates one. The hardware isn't open source anyway so a reverse-engineered open-source driver will never perform as well as a proprietary one. Not by a long shot. Also, even though it's proprietary I already put my trust into their hardware. Their own drivers that go with it are probably fine.

No point in benchmarking, the last time I turned that particular laptop on the 9000igp was artifacting badly, and the FL inverter was on its way out (the hot black corner of death on the screen).

asking moslty cause youtube won't stop suttering in chrome,...thinking that might help..., 1ghz cpu 2gbs of ram.....and yes i need chrome

Just tried the two drivers side by side on an A10 7850K using PCSX2. fglrx managed a smooth 70 fps. Meanwhile the open-source drivers hovered around 25, leading me to think hardware acceleration is absent, and failed to detect one of my screens. Clearly Kaveri support is still lacking on the open-source driver.

Your CPU is the problem, I'm running a Celeron M380 1.6GHz and I have the same problems in Youtube. (2GB of RAM as well). Chrome itself is just bad for old computers now.

Firefox 3 is the best for old computers, though Opera seems to be the best HTML5 browser on all of my older computers

it was legit 100% free

i mean its great for checking emails

and a paper weight

 

but it can play 1080p video no fps drop through the external hdmi port so...idk, .mp4's  its wacked

i use in conjunction with my desktop, easier to take to school then  my desktop

I'll keep on trying to find a way to get the graphics running better, but you might be better off with Lubuntu-it didn't appear to have any issues on my Diamond Stealth SIII S540 with 2x Pentium 3 @ 1.08GHz.

If it can play 1080p video its already doing better than this old thing under XP, I can't even watch a DVD without the video going out of sync (its funny pausing, hearing the sound stop, then watching as the video keeps playing until it catches up with the audio track).

it can but not on the display needs to be plugged in to the tv , so its hastle , great for presentations however

TBH, you should just be happy it can do that without any problems, with netbooks and old laptops there just aren't that many ways to get them doing anything that can be classed a even remotely intensive. I know you need Chrome, but if you don't want issues with stuttering (which is related to Chrome's inbuilt flash player being used instead of the default HTML player) use Opera.

those drivers helped a little

 

BUT this biggest problems was extensions takin up ram exiapplly google cast cleared almost 750mbs of ram and that fixed most of the issue getting solid 27frams in the tubes now

 

since im sigend it synced  the extensions from my beast sooo.. lol...

if your still using the fglrx or fglrx-updates driver. you should be able to raise the min clock of your gpu, which in return will help out with your 2d graphics and should be able to get you over 30fps.
