Executing grub-install /dev/sda failed (Linux issue)

Trying to install some Ubuntu based Linux distro on a Sony Vaio (don't know any more then that) for some reason they all (Ubuntu, lubuntu, kubuntu) fail to install with: executing grub-install /dev/sda failed this is a fatal error, how can I resolve this and install some distro on the system?  It has an old standard BIOS (no GUI, no useable mouse). I had Ubuntu installed on it last night, but forgot the password I had set (it would log in automatically though) was going to reinstall it (or some distro based on it) but now I can't apparently.  The system is supposed to have 2 64 GB SSDs I think . . . . . Trying on either has the same issue.
