Well don't just suggest for him to go elsewhere...

OP I personally suggest Acronis. Which creates images of your harddrive, it's a little expensive. However is well worth it.

Clonezilla.  It is free and works great.

I just downloaded the program and burned the ISO to a DVD.  When I want to backup my hard drive (SSD) I simply put in the DVD and restart my computer.  Clonezilla has it's own GUI/Interface.  Pick what you want to copy and where it is going to be saved.  Takes me about 10 minutes to backup, and 10 minutes to reinstall the clone.  This works as a great measure against malware and viruses too.

I should mention Windows 7 (and probably win8) have ISO backup capabilities also.  I tried it, it sucked... may work for you though.
