Whats the better gaming CPU

Go to solution Solved by jato_127,

at the risk of sounding dumb would the graphics card I pick affect my CPU performance, such as an Envidia card is more compatible with an Intel CPU then an AMD CPU?

hey guys I'm planning on doing a build in the future for a semi high-end gaming machine. what I want to know is what would be the better CPU for gaming 3770k, 4770k or any other CPU but I am leaning towards Intel at the moment. Right now I'm not accounting for price so take that out of the situation. I want pure specs for gaming thanks.

If your going high end route might as well go 4770K that being said is Intel the only CPU maker your going with?

Motherboard: MSI-990FXA-GD65 | CPU: AMD FX-8350 @ 4.3Ghz | CPU Cooler: Corsair H100 | RAM: 8GB Corsair Vengeance 1600Mhz | GPU: MSI GTX 770 Lightning @ 1300Mhz CC and 8000Mhz MC | Case: Fractal Design ARC Midi R2 | PSU: Corsair AX850 | OS: Windows 8.1

at the moment I am because they seem to have the best on the market for what I want but this build is going to take a while so if AMD comes up with something better by the time I'm ready to start ordering then I may switch.

No. They are all equally compatible.

What you want to do is spend the most on your graphics card, because that's what actually drives game performance & just grab yourself an i5 Haswell, a 4670K if you're going to be overclocking.

I don't recommend going with a third generation intel CPU (3770K or 3570K) because they're based on a discontinued platform (Z77) .

For the graphics card I would recommend waiting until around September-October, when AMD is going to release their new generation of graphics cards.
Performance will go up, prices will go down.

Oh did he ask about those cpu's? I couldn't find where he said anything about them.

My Rig: AMD FX-8350 @ 4.5 Ghz, Corsair H100i, Gigabyte gtx 770 4gb, 8 gb Patriot Viper 2133 mhz, Corsair C70 (Black), EVGA Supernova 750g Modular PSU, Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 motherboard, Asus next gen wifi card.

Hyper-threading does almost nothing in most games. People should hear other offers rather than the options they chose, because they may be a waste of money and have no benefit at all for their purposes. And he said this and I quote: "what I want to know is what would be the better CPU for gaming 3770k, 4770k or any other CPU."

Price isn't a problem? He wants what will perform best?

Any i7 will whoop any i5

I5 is a bit of a downgrade from an i7, therefore it is hardly not a suggestion.

Again, hyper-threading has absolutely no benefit in most games. It would be a waste of money to buy the 3770/4770 if only gaming. So even for "pure specs," it's a waste.

I STRONGLY disagree here, let's take a real world example here. You've got a game that's using 4 threads max (no game uses more) so 4 of your i7's virtual threads are just sitting there scratching their balls and waisting your money. The same virtual threads make the CPU run much hotter thus lowering the overclocking potential. You could save money by getting an i5 and buying a better graphics card which acually helps your games run better. Price Is always an issue, you could spend 5k on a build and still not have enough money to throw around, even then I'd get an 4670k, and do a crossfire or ultra hi end SLI.

Now this story has been told over and over, and frankly I can't believe we're back on it again. There's a reason all of us gamers buy i5K's if we're not doing video rendering and such CPU intensive tasks. The modern games just aren't that CPU dependant. The bottom line is:

Gaming PC: Hi-end i5 K series

Designer, hi end working PC: i7

On another note: don't get sucked in into RAM overkill, 16gb@ 1600 is plenty for gaming, just make sure it's 2x8Gb, so you can upgrade down the road.

So yeah, have fun.

what mobo you will be getting if:

x79=3930k

z77=3770k/3560k

z87=4670k/4770k

these are the CPU's good for gaming :)

That's an odd post to choose as the best answer. It's not even an answer, it's a question.

Even that is too much imo... I was not able to max out my 8GB, I tried. Had every single program on my computer open and loaded models up too, where applicable... Barely broke 6GB. And games are not RAM intensive at all.
