X79 Question

Hi everyone,

 

I would like to know if it is worth building a X79 PC right now (with used components) because I can get a i7 3820 and an Asus P9X79 deluxe for 250€ (265$).

 

Is it a good buy or not?

I would say the usefulness of the 3xxx chips and X79 chipset will ultimately come down to what you intend to do with the PC. I have a 3770K in my main rig and in all honesty have no intention of upgrading the CPU or motherboard anytime soon because nothing I do ever stresses it to the point where I am bottlenecked.

 

If you want to play games and just troll around on the internet I would say it sounds like a decent price, but if you need actual computational power for rendering etc then you will definitely see benefits in buying the newer generation of chips.

I intend to use it for casual gaming and school. Maybe some video rendering occasionally. Down the road (5-10 years from now) I hope to get a Xeon 12-core on the cheap and a bunch of RAM and just have fun with it.
