Sata to usb?

Go to solution Solved by Captain_WD,

I just got this http://www.delock.de/produkte/G_61883/merkmale.html?setLanguage=en

Seemed like a very useful tool, but it doesn't work for me.

When attatching a drive to it, it doesn't even start spinning. I tried both usb 2 and usb 3 ports. If the usb 3 port is connected to a usb 2 port, it does make a connecting sound, but still the disk doesn't spin.. so nothing that I can access.

Has anyone else had this thing? I'm thinking mine must be broken :(

Hey Ramonn,

What drive are you using that cable with? 2.5" drives (laptop HDDs and SSDs) shouldn't have problems with it. 3.5" drives (regular desktop HDDs) would require additional power as USB cannot provide enough for them to fully spin up.

Try checking for the drive (when you connect it) in BIOS, Device Manager and Disk Management. I used such cable when installing my WD Black2 in my laptop and it worked perfectly fine. I am still using it when accessing my older laptop drive. If you get a power cable for the drive, you can also use it with larger 3.5" drives. :)

you need to plug both in

at the same time

plug usb 3 into usb 3 and usb 2 into usb 2 port

if no 3

just plug both into usb 2

Ya obviously.. but that didn't work, so I tried every possible way xD

Also this is not for some permanent shit, it's just to be able to quickly access an internal hdd or ssd. Usb is kinda universal.. thats why i got this.

Still doesn't work tho ;\

In conjunction with this you may also have to initialize the disk if it is new. Which is start, type disk management, GPT if prompted. Find the black bar matching the disk, right click it and select new simple volume, follow the onscreen wizard leaving most defaults except make sure to give the drive a letter.

Well the Windows connecting sound wouldn't be from the cable. So it is probably recognizing an uninitialized drive. If Windows spins drives that aren't initialized I don't know. Either way, It wouldn't hurt to see if disk manager recognizes it.

Thanks @captain_WD, 100% sure this is the problem. I haven't tried it yet, cuz I have no reason to rip open my laptop atm. Funny that it didn't state this on the website I bought it from. I went on the manufacturer website, where it does say "only 2.5" HDD and SSD". This tool is a lot less useful than I thought xD

I found out 2.5" drives usually require about 5 Watts of power, while the usual 3.5" drives require 20 Watts.
No point of going around and trying to modify this to have additional power.

Still we wait for usb c to become the standard :P
Thanks for the help. Closed.
