They're the same card.  280X is just a re-branded 7970.

 

I'd get whichever is cheapest.  All things being equal though, the R9 280X is guaranteed to be newer.

same chip.. TBH this thread troubles me. 7970 is a 280x, 280x is a 7970.

I guess by RMA you mean refurbished?

 

If it comes with the same warranty as a 280x I don't see the point why you wont buy the 7970.
But I guess that also depends on what kind of 7970 they offer for that price.

280x is a rebranded 7970 with slightly better specs.

 

If you can find a 280x for around that price like I did, go for it

As an owner of both of these cards, I'd say the 7970.

As people have said, the chip is exactly the same. And while a 280X would be newer, it has it's own problems. From what I have seen, there was a very high demand for 280Xs when they came out. The 7970s seem to have generally better binned chips due to the lower demand at the time. If the 7970 is cheaper, I would definately choose that over a 280X.
