my friend wants to buy new gpu and he has a monitor with VGA only, no hdmi

he has a DVI-->VGA converter at home but it's strange, it has very few pins

gpu has DVI-I port and converter is DVI-A

will it work? or he has to buy new converter?

People will definitely correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe DVI are backwards compatible, so you can plug your DVI-A into either DVI-I or DVI-D and it should work no problem.  But on a more important note, new gpu with VGA  :o Linus might get angry...

VGA is an analogue signal which means it's picture quality is highly dependent on the quality of the cable.  Where as HDMI(and DVI) are digital signals.  (There is no difference in image quality between HDMI and DVI).  Only the highest end VGA can get close to the DVI and HDMI in terms of quality.  The main difference between HDMI and DVI is that HDMI can carry a sound signal as well.  HDMI 1 technology is maxed at 1080p 60hz.   HDMI 2.0 can do 4k @ 60hz.  No one really supports HDMI 2.0 yet as it is relatively newish, but DVI dual-link and display port can handle much higher resolutions and refresh rates.

There's analog and digital DVI - DVI-A and DVI-D. DVI-I is capable of both. So this DVI-A adapter will work with a DVI-A or DVI-I port on a graphics card, but not DVI-D.
