so, this is rather simple and quick. although my situation is complex.

i have an HP laptop with windows 8.1 on it.

im building a new system (not built yet, still need thermal paste and some mobo standoffs) and would like to have windows 10 on there.

is it possible, for me to get windows 10 for free, and put it on the new system, while keeping the laptop functional?

If you are going to put Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 on your desktop, you will be eligible to receive Windows 10 for free.  Since you are talking about two separate computers, you will need two different keys in order to keep them working.  One license per computer unless you order Windows through a school district or something where they usually order in bulk.

My PC specifications are in my profile.
