GTX 970 cable?

I saw that Linus had to plug in a cable from GPU to motherboard on his GTX 670 TI (i think its that one, but i might be wrong). I saw this on his 1500 pc build vid. Although, I am going to use an MSI GTX 970. Would I still need to plug it in with a chord? Doesnt it already work bu plugging it in the PCIE x16 port without the need to add an eight or six pin cable? Also what is the use for the 8 or 6 pin cable?

I second this, PCIE slot is just the info transfer, 6 pin power is the power. think of it like the SATA cable and SATA power cable, a Drive needs both

if your GPU has a 6pin slot and 8pin slot both will need to be plugged in, my 970 only has two 6pin slots. also use the PSU cables, not the adapters your GPU may have come with
