So this is my first time mining any type of cryptocurrency. I have downloaded the ziftrcoin wallet and have started mining by clicking the "mine tab". Is this all I have to do? Is there any more to it?

That's all there is to it for solo CPU mining. I don't think they've released the GPU mining yet, but you can join pools. Pools give you less coins at the moment though, seeing as it's still fairly easy to mine solo.

For future reference, how would I join a pool? And it IS more efficient to mine solo as of now? Also, is there any penalties for pausing work on a block and continuing later? Or is it similar to f@h

Not too familiar with pool mining, I've just read a bit on Ziftrcoin. There's a subreddit for Ziftrcoin though, there's likely something there that can help. 

 

Right now it is, because of some benefit that's being given out to current users or something, as well as the fact that it can still be mined with a CPU fairly efficiently. When GPU mining comes around for it, CPU mining will likely become useless as it's much less efficient.

Any idea when GPU mining for it will be released? I mean I'm itching to throw a few 970s at it.

Pool mining will give you a consistent stream of income from your mining, as opposed to getting a bunch of coins when you solo mine a block. The efficiency is the same. Statistically, your hardware will mine the exact same number of coins over a period of time, whether solo or pool, but pool mining eliminates the 'lottery' effect.
