New Boot Drive Questions

Go to solution Solved by Lolzious,

You'll be fine.

Although, I would format the HDD just to be extra safe, but that's me :P

I have an old V300, with the good controller, and it's a great SSD. HyperX is solid though, and I think you'll be fine. For $3 more, even on SATA 2, you'll notice a large difference compared to the SSDNow

Hello LTT forum members.

I have some questions to ask. I guess I'll get right into it:

1. If I install a new SSD as an OS boot drive alongside my current 2TB HDD (which also has an OS), and run Windows 10 beta on that SSD, will I be able to access all my files and write to the old drive without a problem?

2. I have decided to go with a Kingston SSDNow V300 over a HyperX Fury for $3 more, because I heard of a few issues with the Windows install recognising the HyperX Fury. I also know Kingston changed the controller on the V300 which made it slower, but how much does it really matter (also running on SATA2 3Gb/s)?

I think that's all I have to ask - thanks in advance if you can help!

(Also I know the first one is pretty silly, but I want to make sure :P)

I'm here to learn and help others!

Hey Wind1000100,

As @Lolzious pointed out, you should be just fine. You would have to configure the boot order to boot from the SSD (or the BIOS would ask you from which drive you would like to boot) and you should be OK seeing all other files on the HDD (same as if you boot from the HDD, you should be able to see everything on the SSD). :)

Regarding the SSD, all solid state drives work rather well, but because you are using SATA2 you would be limited to 375MB/s transfer speeds.

If this helped you, like and choose it as best answer - you might help someone else with the same issue. ^_^

Ok, thanks. I certainly won't be formatting it, it has all my files!

@Lolzious The V300 just dropped from $75 to $72 (amazing timing). Is the HyperX Fury for $78 still worth that $6 over SATA2?
