Convince a console gamer-help!

My brother wants to get an xbox one or ps4, im not against one or the other but I am pro PC (shock horror), I'm trying to convince him out of spending £400 on one when he can get a better longer lasting pc for that much.

I pointed out pc has better graphics and he said he doesn't care.

I pointed out it's cheaper in the long run, he said hes not going to care because in a years time and he can just sell his console for £200.

I explained a pc can do pretty much anything a console can do, he said he just wants to sit, game and watch movies...
..when i pointed out you can get a low end pc to do that for less than a console--still didnt care.

No offense to anyone intended but it's almost like hes being an apple fanboy/die hard christian and I can't cope with the ignorance. I was once like him and pro-console until I decided to build myself a rig because I needed something more powerful than my k7 athlon 650 and its sd ram....

Does anyone have any solid good easy ways to ween him off? I build pc's and ressurected his old pentium 4, vista, ddr1 PC (from back in 2006) but its been sitting here for months. I'm tempted to relieve him of it seeing as he just wants a console and a laptop it seems.

At that price point a next gen console would be better than a PC. At the end of a console life span, an APU system can definitely compete with the consoles. But at launch, there's really no question which one is more cost efficient.

Let him play some games on your PC, experiencing it firsthand.  If he's still not enthused, oh well, you tried, let him spend his money where he wants.  If he's happy with a PlayStation or Xbox, then he's happy.

I build pc's, ive got a core 2 quad q6600 that i can easily OC stick in 4-8gb of ram buy a decent 775 board for upto £65gbp, a corsair cx500 psu and a gtx 260, okay it might not have DX11 but for £100 you can gat a 7790 or for £140 a 7850 (same or better than a ps4 and xbox).

In a few years he could just get a new pc IF he has to (his old pc shows hes not too into upgrading as opposed to something completely new) but atleast then hed be a cognitive thinking pc gamer rather than a blissfully blind console gamer..

Let him play some games on your PC, experiencing it firsthand.  If he's still not enthused, oh well, you tried, let him spend his money where he wants.  If he's happy with a PlayStation or Xbox, then he's happy.

This is my current thought, problem with that is he doesn't game that much which might raise the point "well he doesnt need a gaming pc then" but I'd say why spend nearly half a grand on a console if you dont wanna game? the last pc game he played was gta3, the last console game he played was saints row and gta4, still not demanding games, if he wants to play gta5 and battlefield I highly doubt more than a Q6600 and a 7850 (both OC'd) will be required to play on par with the current gen...

plus you dont have to deal with all the other propriatary rubbish MS and sony will inevitably try and flog him.

Xboner and ps4 will destory that config for performance...........both will run very close to a 7970 once they are optomised. 

 

To build a PC that runs like the new consoles, you are going to have to spend £1000...........

The PS4 and Xboner are going to be great little performers, deal with it, and stop trying to convert people from console to PC, let them find there own way over, or let them have both, and enjoy everything modern gaming tech has to offer...

This being said, you are completely right about expandability, but then it comes down to what the brother wants. He can spend more on a PC now and pay small bills down the road to keep up with updates while enjoying the benefits of better looking/cheaper games, or he can buy one system that'll simply work for several years. The only way that he can be really screwed over by going with a PC is if the CPU ends up being a bottleneck in future games. It could all end up being too much of a hassle if the brother just wants simplicity, and how can we blame mainstream users for wanting things to just turn on and work?

you can OC a 7850, didnt know you could do that (or upgrade) a console..

I have a spare windows licence already from like a year ago when he first said he was having trouble with his pc.

got some spare cases, theyre not as small as a console but they aint plastic either.

hes playing on an old 50in plasma tv, he has a 1440x900 monitor gathering dust...

OCing a 7850 won't keep it going for the entire time. There's just not enough VRAM. In the end I still think he'll end up spending more on a PC. We can all agree that buying quality parts gets addicting. I'm guilty of caps spamming PC MASTER RACE!11!!! in real life, but lots of us can't really argue about cost effectiveness since we're hooked on water coolers and overkill GPUs. Your brother might join our ranks of rampant money spending. Good for us, bad for his wallet.

Consoles don't get upgraded, but optimization increases quicker on consoles as devs get used to making games on the platform. But if you already have an OS and a monitor then cool beans.

Is he a fan of any exclusives, by the way? Couldn't that be a reason that he would want a console. I know that if I gave a damn about Halo I'd take an Xbox over a budget PC.

Optimised? I thought they we're running x86? AMD's GCN should be relatively the same wether its thier consoles APU's or a dedicated graphics card, there shouldnt be any "cell sucks to optimise for" scenarios unless im much mistaken.-I may be but we'll see.

I find it hard to believe a ps3 can keep up with a 8800gt (both from 2006) so forgive me if i dont think a £400 console will somehow grow render output units and become a £300 7970, if it does i will switch back to consoles and blow the cobwebs off my 360. (yeah I miss forza)

well his old pc has a ati 9800se (was a 9600 pro when he gave it to me to fix), the equivilant console at the time was the 360 with an ati x1850? (and RROD)

so I dont think that upgrading will be a thing for him, that said hes wasted money last year buying an RB5 impreza for 6k after I advised him not to and it gave him nothing but trouble he then traded it in for a brabus smart car (again £6000, £4500 exchange) and now wants to get an evo....

hes 34 and as far as money goes spends it like a 16 year olds first paycheck, As his brother i just wish it was a bit more wisely hence im hoping to get him off his console every 5 years routine, he could buy a £1000 pc if he wanted but im trying to point out £400 on an xbox wont serve him as well as an equivilant pc over time.

The is such a thing as software optImisation and you will be surprised what a difference it makes compared to a PC, having unified hardware like consoles have makes it a lot easier to develop and optimise their games for....

 

An 8800GT running as good as a 360 or PS3, as some who ran 8800's in SLI for a long time and owned an 360, the the same game running on both platforms always ran better on 360,

 

I'd love to see the an 8800 run the likes of asassins creed and GTA 4 as playable as the 360 was, never mind the likes of FIFA (runs like sloopy shit on an 8800) and the last of us
