memory upgrade

hey i have 8 gb 1333mhz ddr3 and i want to add a 3 sitck to my pc so that i get 12gb 

my motherboard can support 4 memory monduls and up to 16 gb 

can i put in 4 gb or 8 gb of drr3 1600mhz ram or does it have to be 1333 mhz?

You can put in 1600MHz RAM, but it will run at 1333MHz if the other sticks are running at that speed. It's generally best to get the same speed and CAS latency RAM when mixing/adding more.

Mixing & Matching ram is never recommended. But, if you gotta do what you gotta do, then as Oshino Shinobu said, the MHz will all run at the speed of the lowest stick I believe.
