CPU: Intel i5 4690k

MoBo: MSI GAMING 5

GPU: EVGA 750Ti 2GB GDDR5

PSU: EVGA 750W G2 SuperNOVA

Storage I: Crucial MX100 128GB

Storage II: WD 1TB Caviar Blue

Case: Corsair 450D

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium

Disk Drive: The black Asus one

Wireless Card: TP-Link N900

Alrighty, my friends have been wanting me to get a PC for quite a while and I've decided to build one. I'm going to be mostly gaming on it. League, TF2, TES (Morrowind-Skyrim), Fallout, PS2, and the like. The occasional YouTube video is probably not amiss. And I like to watch streams.

Now, before you go on a rant about the 750Ti. I got it on sale a while back when everyone was praising it for being a great card for its price. I've already got it. It's going to definitely be my first upgrade.

Routing an Ethernet cable to my room isn't an option, which is why I went with the N900.

I'm not sure which ram to get, which is what I need help with. Every other person recommends something else.

Wadd'ya think? Did I choose the right parts?

EDIT: Forgot to add. Everything is from Amazon.com priced in USD.

Motherboard is bit overkill, you could save a bit of money by going with a cheaper one.

8GB of ram is enough, which one doesn't really matter as long as it is by a good company like G Skill, HyperX or Corsair.

CPU: 6600K @ 4.6Ghz | COOLER: H100i GTX | MOBO: Asus Z170 AR | GPU: EVGA GTX 1080 Ti Hybrid | RAM: G.Skill Trident Z RGB 16GB |

8 gigs will be enough for gaming. Try getting 2x4 sticks. If not enough budget, do 1x8 stick.

I should've added that, my bad. I know to get 8BG of ram. In a 2x4GB dim configuration. My question was just by what brand to get.

I've looked at Corsair's Vengeance and Vengeance Pro line. As well as some of Kingston's HyperX ram. A few others too. Which would you recommend? As Sankster said, should I get 3330Mhz ram?

EDIT: How is it overkill?

Which ever is cheapest or looks the best its completely up to you but the corsairs vengeance is a good choice.

It's not that overkill, it's just that you paying for extra features that you probably will never use.

How to choose RAM:

  1. Filter for DDR3, 240pin. Duh. Else it won't work with mobo.
  2. Next, filter all the 1x4, 2x4 and 1x8 kits. Yup, that's right, 1x8. It'll have near 0 difference for your purposes.
  3. Filter 1,5V or less. Because... reasons (cuz Haswell).
  4. Sort prices from low to high. Get the first RAM thats: 1600mhz (CAS 9 or lower), 1866mhz (CAS 10 or lower), 2133mhz or higher (CAS 11 or lower). Note when I say "the first". All of these configs will perform exactly the same, as higher speeds is compensated by higher latency. So the first one that fits the above criteria is your choice.
  5. Maybe dump 5$ and get a cool looking heatsink.

Beyond that, you are just wasting your cash.

Yes, thank you! You're the first person to post anything like this!

Near zero is not zero. Drop a few % performance here, a bit more there, and pretty soon the system is not performing nearly as well as it could. The price differential between 1x and 2x kits is marginal at best. The performance difference, while small in games is measurable, > 1%. In other applications it can be exceed 15%.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

Looks like a pretty decent build.

What has already been said about RAM, I completely agree with. 8GB is enough for most people. You definitely don't need 3330Mhz RAM, though. I think Linus's advice in buying RAM is to get as much memory as you can afford (within the scope of the build) from a reputable company. Companies like Corsair, G.Skill, Crucial, and Kingston (I'm probably forgetting some others) are among the top brands in RAM. I think this is the closest you'll get to a "RAM buying guide" from LinusTechTips' youtube channel (or TechQuickie). I didn't find anything more specific.

Also, have you considered a PowerLine Adapter for your networking setup, instead of a wireless connection? I've known PowerLine adapters to be more reliable and overall faster than wireless at long(ish) distances. You'd need two adapters and two ethernet cables. Here's one I've used in the past and was probably one of the easiest pieces of technology I've installed in quite a while. It was a bit cheaper when I got it, at around $25 (I think) and I think it came with two ethernet cables already, but I'm not 100% sure.

There are some instances where a PowerLine Adapter isn't ideal, like in an apartment complex. Here's some more information on it, if you're interested.

I'd completely forgotten about these. Hmm, I'll take a look at it.
