When i first built my computer with a fx4100, it ran very cool. I overclocked it to 4.0GHz and with prime95 it never went above 55C.

After a year or so, i started having stability issues when doing Folding@Home, so i turned it back down to the stock 3.6GHz.

I was curious about what temps i was getting under load, so i downloaded Core Temp and CPU-z. I would normally sit at about 45C under load. I found one field that caught my eye though. The "Tj. Max" field.

After visiting Google, i found that that was the maximum safe temp of the CPU. I remember reading on the box not to go above 70, and other processors can go much higher. To test if this was just a mistake, i turned my CPU fan down and watched the temperature.

Sure enough, when it hit about 51C the computer blue-screened. This is odd, because i ran my CPU much hotter before.

Does anyone know what might be the problem? I re-applied thermal paste and underclocked to 3.4GHz to be on the safe side.

Wow, very strange. I have an FX 4130 OC'ed @ 4.0Ghz and never had it bluescreen like that.  I normally hit 65 max when stress testing, and I'm around the 58 range when I'm just playing games and such.

Do you have the voltage turned up? And what's your motherboard?

TJMax is usually pretty high... Is there anything else causing issues, perhaps?

The projects never end in my line of work.

everything in the BIOS is set to auto, and i am using an MSI 970a-g46.

I could manually set the voltage though. I could test and see how low i can get and still be stable.

You should increase the stock slightly. Look up some FX 4100 overclocking guides.

Also, the mainboard looks good, and the VRM heatsinks should stand up to higher voltages.

I on the otherhand am stuck with a crappy mainboard with 0 VRM heatsinks. Still running at stock voltage :(
