Another what program to use question

So after solving the problem of what browser to use (Firfox 3.0, anything newer seemed to have issues as they relied on the SSE2 instruction set), I've come across the problem of not having the right media payer for this old rig, as VLC, MPC and windows media player are unable to play a simple DVD, or any video file for that matter, without lag, the video going blank (e.g. grey turns mostly in VLC with a few scattered squares of the proper footage). What will be the best media player for my computer? (Please in mind that its a Pentium III 1GHz without the SSE2 instructions favoured by most if not all new media players-RAM is of no concern BTW).

I doubt a P3 could even run 720p well if at all, so its probably just not powerful enough to do it

I thought it wasn't powerful enough for webrowsing as well until I got FF working, which is why I'm looking for a different media player as well.

of course its powerful enough for web browsing anything can do that 

 

but video playback requires a lot more CPU performance if VLC and MPC cant do it, I cant imagine much else will, they are super light programs that play almost anything

 

maybe if the video was lower quality etc

I don't think you have proper codec for your system, even if the hardware doesn't support h.264 encode (the most used codec for now), it will use software mode and CPU will process it, and ofcourse with very slow decoding (it means choppy video or rather slideshow)

 

if you add Video card to at least radeon 9xxx series or GeForce 6xxx then you could play all video you want, that GPU will be used to decode video instead your CPU (but not with VLC, because VLC is using CPU to decode everything)

 

for codec pack

don't install both because usually it will crash between each other.

I don't think I could go lower quality than DVD, though downloading the first version of MPC and using that appears to be working, albeit at about half the normal framerates.

I've got a Geforce 6200 on the way as it happens, but until I get it I'm stuck with the FX 5500.
