1. Budget & Location: Up to $3K, USA

2. Aim: A powerful yet quiet system to watch videos in HD or higher, astrophotography photo editing in Photoshop, video editing including 4K on rare occasions in Adobe Premiere and very causal gaming up to 4-6 hours a week with first person shooters and mmorpg.

3. Monitors: 1 with 4K resolution

4. Peripherals: Windows 8.1 Pro

5. Why are you upgrading?: I'm not a professional in any of the above under "Aim", so, I know I don't need the best of the best but life has taught me that investing in compatitable quality parts whether it's for your car, home, etc. is worth it versus wasting money 2-3x over for mediocre.

6. Below is what I'm considering:

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K (Overclocking is not a priorty, though, I do have a Noctua nh-d14 collecting dust)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z97X-Gaming G1 WIFI-BK
Memory: Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
Storage: Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD x2 (will be in RAID 10)
Video Card: Asus Radeon R9 295X2 8GB Video Card
Case: Fractal Design Define R5 Black
Power Supply: Corsair HX1000i
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro
Monitor: Monoprice 28in UHD LED CrystalPro 4K

I have spare peripherals like DVD burner drives, keyboard, mouse, bluetooth dongle, etc.

Your thoughts and recommendations are welcomed!

sorry, but i couldn't justify a platinum power supply for like 200 more dollars, if not probably cut out in the cpu/motherboard.

1. you need 4 ssds for raid 10

2. dual 980s?

3. x99 if you do adobe premiere (maybe?)

bootiful, or at least this is what i would do with all dat cash monay

and yes, the X99 part of it can be replaced with much less expensive hardware (4790k, Z97, DDR3) but this is what i would do :P

and sorry to break it to you, but the 295x2 really doesnt make that much sense in the market when 290x's exist as well as 970's and 980's :)

hope this helps :D

You guys are so quick! It's like we're texting!! Thanks zloslavez and Swndlr for the alternative setups. I feel x99 is still too early to adopt for me because when I built my last build on a X58 I purchased a Core I7 920 and then less than a year later the 980x came out.... So, I may feel different this time next year :) . And thanks Hatsune for the heads up about raiding SSDs. I just quickly read about them and will just stick to one SDD.

I would suggest a single, larger ssd instead of a RAID array - Samsung 850 EVO-Series 500GB 2.5" Solid State Drive. RAID does not take the place of good backups. SSD in RAID 0 arrays do not offer the level of benefit realized by hdd RAID 0 arrays. Partly due to the fact that ssd are inherently random devices. There is no significant difference in the time to access any block in the unit. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ssd-raid-benchmark,3485-13.html, in fact the whole article makes good reading on the subject.

Are there particular features in 8.1 Pro that are needed?

I would suggest an IPS monitor for its better color reproduction and wider viewing angles. Dell P2715Q 60Hz 27.0" Monitor would be a decent choice.

The NH-D14 will extend over the 1st PCIe slot of the GA-Z97X Gaming G1 motherboard. You may want to consider another choice. The Asus Z97-DELUXE is a nice board. Or get a different cooler.

few questions:

1. why 32 gigs of ram, thats a bit overkill from what op seems to need

2. one 500GB ssd makes more sense than 2 250's

3. those gpu's why 2 295x2's, thats 4-way CF.........

4. windows can be acquired from sites like reddit for near $20

1. dunno how u plan to render 4k with 16 GBs

2. raid 0, could go 500gb if u wanted to

3. to get a heater for the winter. edit: wanted to experiment with the $600 295X2, SLI 980s + respectively cheaper power supply + better cpu seems better still.

4. still under $3,000.

16GB will likely be fine for the rare occasions that OP says he will be doing it.

and what would you plan to do during the summer lol when that heater gets hot :/

although the 295x2's are cheaper, 980's > 295x2's, i feel 4x CF would be a pain in the ass too lol

Sorry for the absent. But due to your deeply appreciated comments and recommendations I was forced back into research mode. And this is what I decided on.

CPU: Intel Core i7-5930K

CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D14

Motherboard: Asus X99-E WS

Memory: Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2400

Storage: Samsung 850 EVO 250GB

Video Card: XFX Radeon R9 295X2 8GB

Case: be quiet! Silent Base 800

Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA 1000 P2

Operating System: Microsoft Windows 8.1

Monitor: Dell P2715Q

Tuniq TX-4

miniDP to DP cable v1.2

Total: $3,345.11

I mentioned I wasn't going to get into X99 but Linus' silent build video inspired me. The total price was over my budget but due in large part to California retailers and associated taxes. Not a surprise to me, however, I do like to receive the items quicker. I guess I'll have to create a new build log thread once the rig is up and running! ;)

I may not have responded to some of you but I want you to know that I referred back to this page on multiple occasions (even while at work...). So, THANK YOU ALL!

Be Quiet! lists the largest motherboard size as ATX. The X99-E WS is SSI CEB which is an inch deeper.

I noticed that too but I hope it works out since Linus did not mention fitment issues during his silent build.

From pictures it looks like the board will extend over the grommeted wiring pass-throughs. The Linus video shows that only about a 1/4 of each pass-through is covered by the board. So you should be ok. Just plan out the cabling ahead of time.

It looks from the video (@~7:23) like only about half of the upper two passthroughs are covered by the motherboard. Careful cable planning should be all that is needed.
