Hi, I'm looking for a home server for about £400. I want some file sharing for my network and to be able to run gaming servers on it. I think it will need about 1 or 2 TB of storage

This is what I'd get. The ram is overkill and the cpu is a little more than you'd need, but I'd recommend the RED drives from WD for their longevity and reliability. The SSD is simply to serve as a boot drive (and yes - I have an SSD in my storage computer and love it).

Since you're running game servers on it, here's an alternate with a little less storage but a better CPU. It is, however, 50 quid more.

CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1220 V3 3.1GHz Quad-Core Processor  (£162.71 @ Scan.co.uk)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-B85M-DS3H Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  (£49.36 @ CCL Computers)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory  (£49.99 @ Amazon UK)
Storage: OCZ ARC 100 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  (£47.98 @ Amazon UK)
Case: Cooler Master N200 MicroATX Mid Tower Case  (£32.86 @ CCL Computers)
Power Supply: EVGA 430W 80+ Certified ATX Power Supply  (£32.99 @ Novatech)
Total: £450.87

"game servers"

Minecraft? For what I've heard Minecraft Server datacenters avoid E3's because the single threading performance

4TB?

I usually never go over 1tb with all my files including small servers, all my data and games.

Keep this in mind:

Minecraft server: Good single threading

NAS: Low performance needed, may want some kind of raid controller

Game servers: 1-2TB harddrive
