Hello, I've started this thread for your help and opinions on what parts i should get for my next gaming desktop. I've already got a rough idea of what i want, however i have had a tough time finalizing my parts. This is only going to be my second build ever so i am still very new to this type of thing. My current part list can be found here: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/rvgQNG

The main questions i have are (Please bear in mind that this computer is going to be used almost entirely for gaming):

1. Would getting a i7-5820k be worth investing in, or is it not worth the value for gaming?

2. Is a second GTX 980 really worth it? I absolutely hate using low graphics as i am HUGE on visuals, so for the most part i will be running all games i play on the highest or near highest visual settings. Games i play include : BF4, CS:GO, World of Warcraft, Borderlands, Dayz, Farcry 4 etc. Also, please note that i will be running two monitors ( 1 x Asus VG248QE and 1 x Samsung S23B300)

3. Though i do intend on tinkering with overclocking in the future, I've never done it before therefore, i do not know just how much more power consumption it will use. Is the 750W PSU overkill? Would a 650W suffice even after overclocking?

Although those are my main concerns, I am still open to opinions and suggestions on different Memory, Motherboards and SSDs.

Random note: Not sure if it's important but the OS i will be using is Windows 7

Thank you for your time! -Sloppy Doo

1. No, Get the 5820k You don't need a 5930k. I mean if you do alot of multicore work then sure but for games it is highly unlikely you will ever use all those cores.

2. Of course, If you are heavy on visuals then a second 980 will do what it says on the tin.

3. That EVGA PSU is pretty nice, Should run both cards good.

If you do want to go 5820k Post an updated build guide and I'll take a look.

Thank you for your input, i realized that i made a small mistake. What i meant to ask originally for the CPU was between either an i7-4790k or an i7-5820k NOT the i7-5930k! I have since updated the page. Also, i have made an second part list showing what i would use should i decide to go with a 5820k : http://pcpartpicker.com/p/Jn3mK8

Do you plan on doing any Video Editing/Rendering/Streaming etc ?

If not then an i5 4690K is fine. If you might do any of the above, then go with the i7 4790K.

  1. Nope. Complete waste of money
  2. Nope. In fact, the 980s are garbage (unless aiming for 4k, but that's because it really can't be done today). Get SLI 970. It'll last you a while. By the time you want to upgrade, there'll be much more powerful GPUs out there.
  3. 500w would be enough even for 970 SLI. Let alone 650w. You'll be golden with it

Also, a quick note. Games show higher FPS in windows 8.1 than windows 7. It's only by 1~2... but I guess I should point that out.

Anyway, tell me if you'd like a particular color theme and I'll come up with something for you.

@Imakuni Thank you very much for your help! I've looked into the comparison with the 970 and 980 and i agree that at 1080p it is just not worth the money to run dual 980's, especially since the scaling at that resolution is not the greatest. However your choice of wording has roused my curiosity; what makes you say that the 980 is "garbage"?

That's because:

  1. If aiming at 1080p, single 970 does the job. The 980 is WAY overpriced for that.
  2. If aiming at 1440p, the 980 just isn't enough. I mean, for a little bit more, you get SLI 970 and have much better performance, that will last you some time.
  3. If aiming at 4k.... well, even SLI Gtx 980 is not enough to pull it off. Sure, it is the best card out there, but even then, it's not as powerful as 4k requires.

Hence, the 980 is "trash", not because it's properly bad, but because it has no place in the world.

A single GTX 980 will cope fine with 1440p in the majority of games.

GTX 980 SLI will cope fine with 4K in the majority of games.

Whether it is good value is another matter, but it certainly isn't garbage, it is just overpriced.

Thank you all very much for all your wonderful feedback, you have helped me greatly in my finalizing of parts for my second computer build! For those of you interested in what that may look like, you can find it here : http://pcpartpicker.com/p/B7NxCJ( It's a lot more modest compared to my original proposal, but alas, i have to agree that with Imakuni that true 4k gaming is not yet fully supported. But when it is, i will definitely upgrade! )

Ok if I was you, ill make a few minor changes

get MSI gaming  7, cause its better and newer. When new technology is coming out constantly when you buy something you want to try keep up if you know what I mean.

get a Gaming SSD Kingston ones, way better and also cheaper for more memory.

Change RAM, unless you want to run it on a lower settings. Get Corsair Vengeance pro 2x 8GB sticks. 2133Mhz

Wait... Kingston SSD.... are you talking about the V300?? If so, then run away from it! There's a reason us builders avoid that particular SSD as if it was plague....

OP, forget everything he said about memory. He has no clue on what he's talking about. Not only you (in particular) gain no benefit from 16gbs, you also tend to get 0 benefit from faster RAM, even though you pay a lot more.

@Imakuni I know Ram speed isn't very beneficial, like 1-3 fps if any. I wasn't looking at the V300, i was looking at the HyperX 3k. What's so bad about the V300? Also, yeah i'm not sure why i wanted 16gb of ram.. I don't even use 70% of the 8GBs i have now, was more of for showy purposes haha, but i have since updated the parts list. Could you take a look and tell me what you think? Thanks in advance! :) http://pcpartpicker.com/p/VLJpJx

The power supply is a bit meh. This XFX (Seasonic) is a lot better.
