Some Trouble Reinstalling Windows

Go to solution Solved by Atmos,

Well, the issue resolved itself, just took over an hour to check compatibility. Freaking windows man...

Alrighty, so due to recent issues with broken files and the such, I'm doing a non-destructive reinstall of windows. (using my original disc and serial key)

Following a nifty little guide i found, I've run the update in Vista SP 2 compatibility mode since my current os is W7 Ultimate SP 2 and the disc is SP 1, so simply updating as that wouldn't work because it would detect that my current OS is more updated than the one I'm trying to use.

Anyway, got the program to start up, and walked through the first few steps, but now it's been that the "checking compatibility" portion of the setup for about 20 minutes or so. Upgrading from Vista to W7 didn't take nearly this long if my memory serves correct, so I'm a bit confused. Should i start over? Should I let it keep going? Should I run it under another compatibility mode? I'm at a bit of a loss here.

What exactly are you trying to do? Why are you reinstalling?

I was having issues with certain programs failing to start or close correctly, using far far more resources than they should. Was idling on the fairly new computer at about 7-11gb of ram usage and cpu at 95% load at idle as well, which on a 4790K should not be happening.

Also the computer taking multiple restarts to finally boot correctly, and random error messages about MSHTML breaking I explorer.

If you don't really have a lot of important stuff on your PC, then I would just reinstall Windows from the disc and wipe your HDDs and redownload your programs.

I've got about 7 terabytes of data on this computer, so wiping the drives is pretty much out of the question. Much of it is backups of old family photos and graphic effects work.

I'd suggest getting all you data to your non-boot drives, then just re installing on your primary drive/partition.

TBH up to you.
