When I first wanted to start editing, I decided to take a class over the summer, luckily my school took it as credits. We used Final Cut Pro X, the new one. I'm now taking another class this semester that all kind of work together for a film minor. We've been learning and using Avid Media Composer. Right before, I tried other programs like Adobe Premiere and Sony Vegas, but I really like Avid, it's incredible. It's only limited in that it's made for TV and Film. I was wondering, do you guys think it would be worth my time to learn multiple editing programs? Such as Adobe Premiere, which seems like the most popular one for everything outside TV and Film. I know Avid very well already, and I'm actually getting really fast at it. I want to get even better, but at the same time, I think if I don't devote any time to learning another program, say Adobe Premiere, then I'm at a loss, because what if I get a job offer and they'll require me to use a format not supported by Avid, or something else that just can only be done in Adobe Premiere.

Is it worth the time to learn and become skilled at multiple programs? Or would it be better to just stick to one, and know one single program extremely well? This also applies to other types of programs such as audio, and photo editing, but I mean come on, who uses anything other than Pro Tools and Photoshop respectively?

The question is whether which software. Should I devote my time to excel at a single one, or only become really good at multiple?

I would rather be excellent at one thing than good at various.

If you know your software very well, you could do everything,

and for the simplest thing you may need and if your software can't do it, just learn that specific thing.
