Go to solution Solved by aeterna789,

That's the thing though, its a new hard drive. Literally got it about 3 months ago

Like XenZibe said, it should have its warranty intact. You should have it changed as soon as possible instead of going through the heartache of loosing a sh** ton of files.

I had a brand new drive about 7 years agi. It worked great for the first 6 months then died without warning. It's possible you got a defective drive.

Every so often when I boot my computer up I get a 'disk read error' then when it does boot my disk spikes to 99% at random and slows everything down to a snails pace.

I have disabled windows indexing and that fixed the problem for a little while but here we are again.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

Hearing any particular noise coming from your drive? Chances are that its about to kick the bucket. My advise is to start backing up your files just in case.

I wish you luck in fixing your HDD! =)

One last note though, and again this is just what I would do given the same situation. If a piece of hardware starts exhbiting noticable and potential work destroying errors within the first 6 months. I would have it replaced in a heartbeat before it causes long lasting damage (and by that I mean, damage to my work and files).
