You can clone it, but I recommend keeping your windows installment on your old HDD and installing a fresh windows installation on your SSD, just so there's less unnecessary crap on the SSD.

Only use your SSD for the programs that you use a lot and Windows itself.

Why would you keep the Windows installation on the hard drive if you're installing fresh to the SSD?

So you still have all your files on the old HDD, you can delete the programs etc, but this saves time copying all your personal files to a backup drive or something.

How i did it was keeping windows on my old HDD, installing new windows on my SSD and having a shortcut to personal files ON my HDD, and put that shortcut on my desktop.

Now i can reinstall my SSD all i want and all i have to do to get my files back is copy+paste a shortcut.

It's a waste of space to keep the windows installation on the hard drive where that installation isn't being used. Why not delete what you can and save space?

so will i have to buy windows again?

It should install just fine. If it doesn't work, you can call Microsoft to have the key reset.

Hi, I am about to buy an ssd and add it onto my current pc and was wondering if there was a way to transfer my operating system onto my ssd, without having to reinstall windows and losing all my data

Hey ||Alexander||,

Cloning could cause problems if you are going from a larger in size to a smaller drive. I would recommend creating an image of your system and restore it on your SSD with a Windows Repair Disk.

Cloning should be fine with Windows 7 and below. If you have Windows 8 or above, you should contact Microsoft so they can verify the operation and activate the OS after you clone it.
