So basically recently I've found out for whatever reason the DNS server provided by my ISP doesn't resolve to Steam's website. Switching to Google's DNS does the job.

However I also noticed when watching playback on Twitch (not sure about livestreams) that if I've connected through Google's DNS it buffers very slowly, switching back to my ISP's speeds it up.

Don't care about the reason behind that.

So I've tried setting Google's as the alt DNS however even still Steam's website doesn't resolve. I've now even listed both my ISP's servers and both of Google's now in advanced settings on the adapter.

Perhaps the way I'm going about this is wrong so here's my question:

How can I make it so my ISP's DNS is the default (I have the IP's) and should it fail to resolve, it'll switch and automatically use Google's?

EDIT: Oh and if it's important - OS' are Win8 and Ubuntu 14.04

usually DNS Setting has 2 columns to fill, sometimes 3 in router

use isp dns for the first 1 and 8.8.8.8 on 2nd column

or fill manually from your windows adapter setting.

however DNS doesn't affect your download speed it just a resolver for Name server.

and using google dns will redirect automaticly closest DNS server from your location.

after piratebay issue lot's of ISP forcing their inject DNS without user knowing it. Including mine

so changing DNS over regular setting might not really change anything.

go to https://www.dnsleaktest.com/after you change DNS and see if it's actually change.

My guess is Google's was pointing me further away than my ISP's. I know I'm not imagining the speed difference because I tested them back to back and while I was using Google's the buffer rate was pathetic. Couldn't even watch 5 seconds before I had to sit there for like 5 mins to get the next 5 seconds.

Your DNS service automatically tries to resolve with alternative DNS servers if the primary one fails.

Do a CMD> ipconfig /flushdns

And try again.

Looks like this did the job. Tyvm.
