If its a good friend go with Z97 and please don't get more than 2x 980s

That looks good, Id recommend the R9 290/x over the 970, But it is down to preference.

I think the a more modern card would be better in the long run

It is down to preference, Most people wouldnt gain much between them.

I wouldn't bother with an antistatic wrist strap. Just touch some bare metal to remove any static. A copper radiator pipe or something like that.
