Using Way Too Much RAM

Go to solution Solved by windude99,

My system seems to be using an insane amount of RAM while idle and I don't know why.

I've got 8GB of RAM and while having Steam and Google Chrome open watching a YouTube video I get a message telling me that I need to free up memory.

I've tried closing some things that I know I don't need running but I'm not really sure what a lot of them are for and other things just start using more so it doesn't change overall.

I've added some screenshots of my task manager and there is a hell of a lot running but nothing taking up all that much RAM individually but together I'm constantly over 75%.

How do I know what else isn't needed and how do I stop them all running on start up?

Many thanks!

A few things I want you to do:

First, please switch task manager to the view that shows the amount of memory used in MB instead of the percentage. Then, take screenshots again and put them in this thread.

Second, Disable everything in msconfig except for driver programs and your antivirus.

Third, run virus scans with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free and Herdprotect. Use the Windows Malicious Software removal to. Run full scans with all fo these (that have the option to do so).

Herdprotect: http://www.herdprotect.com/

A few notes about Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free:

1. Be sure to uncheck the free trial of the pro version of Pro in the installation.

2. Go to gettings and click on "Detection and Protection." Then, click on "Scan for rootkits."

Avast isn't doing anything?

@55five55 Remove norton, SO bad, Enable a pagefile, disable extensions you aren't using.

I had the same problem before my old system died form a hard drive failure (user error). I couldn't figure out the problem, so I closed as much programs as possible with out hurting anything, and uninstalled miscellaneous items on my hard drive. After this I cleared my startup programs and only made the important tasks open up. This mostly cleared it. It started coming back but that's because I installed a bit to many games on steam and my cousin got on my system and wreaked havoc. Then my computer died.

Not sure exactly which thing was most helpful but it seems my system is now using a MUCH more reasonable amount of RAM (19% now). Strangely Chrome is now using no more than 4% of my RAM where it was using over 13%.

I ran Malware Bytes which found 2 things, removed Nortons and disabled everything in msconfig other than antivirus and driver programs.

Thanks everyone for the help! :D :D
