Go for the i7-4790k paired with a Z97 motherboard.

Motherboard on Intel comes down to features and aesthetic.  Find one with the features you absolutely need, and the aesthetic you want.

Get an i5 4690K with a Z97 mainboard. The performance increase is significant. You will be happy. All Z97 mainboards OC pretty much the same. Choose what ever you like best. Just make sure you get all the features you want and the right size (ATX, eATX, mATX).

This is a very good setup as example. The board is good but there are cheaper ones and the CPU cooler is a reliable air cooler that allows you good OCs with stable temps.

The URL you posted wasn't for a specific build. It just comes up to whatever the last build was that the user made on pcpartpicker.

It´s all good now is it? I posted the single links.

I´m sure those work just fine :).

You can do an i5-4690k + Z97 board combo as cheaply as about $295 using an AsRock Z97 board. I do think upgrading to an i7-4790k is a worthy investment since lots of games are able to use 8 threads or more now though. But it's only new games that will benefit from the i7 and that'lll add an extra $100 or so to your costs. You'll also want an aftermarket heatsink, at least a $30 Hyper 212 EVO, if you get an unlocked processor to overclock.

That might be a bit more money for him since he lives in Canada. I don´t know how much the prices differ to the prices in the US.

I will say the i7 will be noticed most if you're trying for 120 Hz refresh rate right now. I don't think anything short of Dragon Age Inquisition has much trouble hitting 60 FPS on an i5. But there definitely seems to be a trend towards 8+ thread games now, and for the first time an i7 actually seems to make some sense for gaming.

Save up for what you want. If your an enthusiast like most of us on this site go with an i7-4790k And get a nice board. If you not the kind of person who needs to blow a wad of money on your computer then the i5 will work just fine. You'll notice a good performance boost switching from a phenom to an i5.
