You can get Bluetooth transmitters and receivers for audio, but I've not seen one that is battery powered.

for me it has 2-3 second audio delay but that doesn't phase me if I'm using it to play music or a podcast in the next room (without the screen). there may be other newer more elegant versions but this one allows me to repurpose an ancient iphone 3g to be useful once again

It exists. It's called 'bluetooth audio dongle' or something like that.

 

The catch is, they don't usually built with a headphone amplifier. They're usually intended to work with active speakers. Those that got some sort of headphone amplifier, I wouldn't put much stock in its power. Get a cheap one ($10 or so) + a Fiio E6 in between. It works.
