Audio visualization software?

Does anyone know of any software that will allow me to visualize audio inputs and outputs as actual waves in real time?  I want to be able to see the actual sound waves that are being processed.

Can you give my any links?  I'm not sure what I would be looking for.  Also is there any way to do it without any extra hardware?
