Would this work?

NakedChicken

I need more storage and I want an ssd. Would 2 1tb hdds in Raid 0 and 2 250 gb ssds in raid 0 work? I'd back up everytjing on a 4 tb hdd.if possible. Thanks

It would work, just make sure youre comfortable with RAID 0. One drive goes, the whole array is gone...

When in doubt, re-format.

Software Raids hardly make sense. The performance increase is just okay-ish. I'd just get a 1 TB SSD and that's it. Do you need even more sotrage?

who cares...

I do, and I don't need that much ssd

On SSD, a single 512 would make more sense for an OS drive.

The projects never end in my line of work.

Wouldn't a 1 TB SSD and the rest on HDD suffice? I guess it makes sense in your case since there's nothing bigger than 1 TB SSDs at the moment. having one big volume is nicer than seperating data. Yepp i think your way is better. :D

I want to raid for speed, nothing else, hints why I would do it with the hdds.

A proper hardware raid controller would do a better job of leveraging the extra speed. However it comes at a higher price. ;) The performance increase by a software raid is as i said okay-ish. :D

Is there one you can recommend? All the things I've seen about Raid 0 has been around 2x read speeds. I would add more than 2 drives per raid.

Intel RAID for a 2 drive RAID 0 does indeed double your performance in straight up benchmarking. A proper hardware raid controller is needed if you're going up into complex raid systems or a RAID 0 with more than 3 drives. But with a 2 drive array, I don't think that there would be any performance difference.

You will notice absolutely no speed increase in everyday use with a RAID 0, trust me I have it set up. The only reason I'm running a RAID 0 is because i initially bought a 240GB thinking it would be enough and then decided that i needed MOAR. The only time you would notice the speed is if you're copying stupid amounts of data from one RAID 0 SSD array to another. Even loading up games and that stuff really doesn't improve with a 2 drive array.

Does that mean the drives wouldn't work?

No, just if one drive failed, youd lose ALL DATA on that array, but the other drive would be usable, just need a re-format.

When in doubt, re-format.

Thanks, I think I'll just buy a couple of 250 gb ssds and a 1tb to back them up to and a 4tb for mass storage. I planned on the Raid ssds for loading games and large programs.
