I'm in a bit of a predicament with my OS.

I just built my first PC, which I love. My uncle gave me free Windows 7 Ultimate ("from his work," LOL, though he does work at Comcast), but I found out today it's 32 bit and only ~3.9 of my 8GB of RAM can be used. This means that 3 Chrome tabs use 44% of my RAM, while 7 Chrome tabs and a Google Doc bumps this up to 64%.

If I download Windows 8.1 Pro (I get a $130 discount from Microsoft for being a student, effectively making 8.1 Pro cheaper than standard 8.1) from Microsoft (paid upgrade, not a fresh install), will I have the option to install the 64-bit version of the OS so I can use 8GB of RAM? Will it do that automatically?

Thanks!

That depends on how legitimate you want to be...

You could wait a few months for win10 and then free upgrade to that.

Depending on your moral values, there are pretty easy ways to grab yourself a free 8.1 or 7 version through the interwebz.

That's actually one of the reasons I want to buy Windows 8.1. I want a legitimate copy of Windows. That, coupled with the above issue, me liking 8.1 better than 7, some of my hardware (Corsair Vengeance K70 and Logitech T650) being optimized for 8.1 and the discount make this something I'm sure I want to do-if it fixes my current issue.

"Paid upgrade, not fresh install" - if it's similar to the upgrade offered by Microsoft when win 8 came out, then no, you wouldn't be able to go from 32bit to 64bit. the upgrade only worked when upgrading in the same "bit" neighborhood.

By that I mean paying for the digital copy rather than a disk.

Blasphemer!

I like the look better, it's faster, has better security features etc.

I don't mean to be rude, but unless you have something constructive to add to the thread, please don't comment.
