high cpu temps

Go to solution Solved by Nikolithebear,

Should i just get an aftermarket cooler? If yes then which one is the one that has the best price/performance ratio?

Yes go get an aftermarket, CM 212 is the go to replacement.

Hi guys,

i have an i7-4790k on an asrock z97 extreme4 board with the stock cooler ( :P)

About half an hour ago my computer crashed while watching a youtube video, i had several chrome tabs opened but nothing else.

I built the computer about a month ago, i didn't worry about it too much but i decided to run a stress test.

I downloaded prime95 and they said to run it for about 6-12 hours but after 2 minutes i had it on my cpu went to 99° celsius...

What should i do? Should i just let it destroy my cpu?

Something else i noticed was that it was only using 4 of 8 GB of ram but since it's a stress test shouldn't it use it to the fullest?

Thanks in advance,

bye!

EDIT 02/24/2015:

All right the hyper 212 evo came in today, i ran aida64 for about 5 hours and the cpu never went higher than 67 °C, i am impressed, it's an excellent cooler!

99 oC is too much. You're in the danger zone. Unexpected shutdown can be explained by CPU temps climbing too high. I never used stock coolers but I guess their lack of performance don't account for temps that high. Have you checked if the cooler is seated properly ? Have you used aftermarket thermal paste ? If so, how did you proceed in applying it ?

Spoiler

I used aida64 and it got to 98° celsius, i ran the cpu, fpu, cache and system memory test together. It says that it detected overheating...what should i do?

It didn't shutdown, it just crashed i mean it wouldn't do anything, i had to restart it..i didn't check if it's seated properly but when i do normal tasks it just gets to max 32° celsius so i think it's seated properly...i didn't use aftermarket thermal paste...
