Hi Guys,

I am wondering if anyone could recommend a X99 chipset build within the budget of £1300 for my Fiancee and I. We would use the system for Tasks such as Programming, Web Design, Virtual Machines and playing the latest games.

Things I Don't Need:

Monitor

Mouse/Keyboard

O/S

I look forward to seeing some of the builds.

Well for VMs you could justify it if you run a lot but honestly a 4790k would be enough for that

@StevenGibson1994

Unless you go balls to the wall on your VM's you don't need all the extra cores that X99 brings

RIG: I7-4790k @ 4.5GHz | MSI Z97S SLI Plus | 12GB Geil Dragon RAM 1333MHz | Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 970 (1550MHz core/7800MHz memory) @ +18mV(Maxed out at 1650/7800 so far) | Corsair RM750 | Samsung 840 EVO 120GB, 1TB Seagate Barracuda | Fractal Design Arc Midi R2 (Closed) | Sound Blaster Z                                                                                                                        Getting: Noctua NH-D15 | Possible 250GB Samsung 850 Evo                                                                                        Need a console killer that actually shits on every console? Here you go (No MIR/Promo)

This is why you should not get an FX CPU for ANY scenario other than rendering on a budget http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/286142-fx-8350-r9-290-psu-requirements/?p=3892901 http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/266481-an-issue-with-people-bashing-the-fx-cpus/?p=3620861

X99 Can make use of quad channel Ram. So swapped your choice over to 4 x 4GB instead.

The EVGA G2 is a better psu.

The H100i has a few issues (Mounting and also with Win 8.1) The Coolermaster Nepton 240M is a good alternative.

I put a 256GB SSD in. If you don't need one then just take it out.

CPU: Intel Core i7-5820K 3.3GHz 6-Core Processor  (£303.54 @ Aria PC)

CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Nepton 240M 76.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler  (£79.99 @ Amazon UK)

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-X99M-GAMING 5 Micro ATX LGA2011-3 Motherboard  (£169.94 @ Aria PC)

Memory: GeIL 16GB (4 x 4GB) DDR4-2400 Memory  (£189.59 @ Overclockers.co.uk)

Storage: Crucial MX100 256GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  (£79.48 @ Amazon UK)

Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 970 4GB Superclocked ACX 2.0 Video Card  (£274.99 @ Novatech)

What are the issues with mounting the H100i, i was hoping to go for 650w PSU but I cant find a reasonable one as I don't plan on SLI in the build. Could you recommend a 650w PSU

A few people on here have mentioned mounting problems with the H100i. You might be able to find something with a search. The Corsair link software also has a few niggly issues if you are using Windows 8.1 such as the LED changing colour.

I would look at the XFX XTR 550W if you only plan on a single GTX 970. It is a Seasonic made unit, fully modular and has zero fan mode.

AMD 7870XT

8GB DDR3

XFX 750W PSU

BeQuiet Dark Rock 2 cooler

If I upgrade anything it will be the graphics card and a new case and monitor. Everything else will last Me a while longer yet. I prefer using a Controller over a Mouse and Keyboard as I mainly play RPG/3rd Person Games, so a lot of the time I use the Xbox on My Tv.

An air cooler will be quieter and offer good cooling. For the usage described an ssd is a must. It is a touch over budget, but one might consider scraping the storage in this build and replacing it with a 1TB Samsung 850 EVO. .

You suggest getting rid of the HDD and replacing it with a 1tb SSD, I thought you weren't meant to use them as primary storage or am I wrong? I will also further down the line add the 1tb SSD

Nothing wrong with using ssd as primary storage. SSD is just more expensive than hdd. But when the budget is there it makes for much faster, quieter, and cooler storage. Programming and web design typically involve working with numerous files and lots of storage i/o. SSD can save a significant amount of time in these tasks.

What would you change about my chosen X99 build apart from the RAM because I will be upgrading to 16gb 1 or 2month after I have built it? Also what would you recommend cooling solution wise, Air cooling or Water cooling?

I would go with 4x4GB memory from the start. Running single channel negates one of the reasons for going with X99. Adding a second 8GB stick later will not guarantee dual channel operation. One might be stuck running single channel. And, because XMP profiles are based on the kit load, one may not even be able to run memory at the advertised speed and timings.

I would go with air cooling because it is quieter and usually less expensive.

If the budget is tight, I would go with i7-4970K on a Z97 motherboard.

Ok, I will go with 4x4gb Ram from the start. The budget isn't tight I just thought I could maybe hold off with 16gb but just to make sure about dual channel operation I will just go with 16gb from get go.

I will go with Air cooling. What do you recommend unit wise, the Cooler Master Hyper 12 Evo or the Noctua DH 15?

The DH-15 will block the first PCIe slot on the GA-X99M-GAMING 5 motherboard. I would suggest the NH-U12S it will not have any issues with memory or expansion card slots.

Could I not just use the second PCIe slot in the motherboard?

You could. But it means that the cpu cooler would have to be removed if a second gpu were to be added, or in fact any expansion card needing more than 1 lane.
